Hope and Change Guy Lobbies Against Keystone Pipeline

I have no idea why Canada would want to build the pipeline anyway, when it can be refined in Canada and create jobs in this country.

I don't believe the country has the refining capacity to do so (feel free to provide evidence to contrary). And even selling the petroleum to the U.S. (or any other nation for that matter) still provides plenty of jobs. The petroleum still has to be taken out of the ground.

Don’t believe the lies you re being fed by the conservative media. The fact is Obama working with TransCanada and the Republican governor of Nebraska on the how to properly Keystone pipeline, and by all reports that is progressing quite well.

McConnell keeps trying g to kill the project by legislating routs that are as environmentally damaging as possible. The best way to see this project move forwards is for McConnell to get out of the way, but he thinks he sees a political opportunity in killing the project and trying to blame it’s death on Obama so he’s doing whatever he can to ensure it can’t move forward.

If this is Obama's position, he's done an exceptionally poor job of communicating it.

The EIS has been completed (and looks pretty thorough to my lay-person's eyes). Are there other environmental studies underway (or even proposed)?

Also, FWIW, the pipeline would go through states other than Nebraska. (It already exists across Kansas and partway into Oklahoma.)

Sorry to follow this off topic tangent. . .

I expect he was referring to CFL bulbs. Those do contain some harmful materials and have to be disposed of carefully.

But their mercury content has been greatly reduced. (It's certainly not accurate to refer to them as "mercury laden"!) Also, they don't cost anywhere near $50 each.

If the bulb isn't broken, no mercury at all escapes, and careful disposal consists of dropping them off in the bin at Home Depot.

For comparison: these bulbs have something like 4-5 mg of mercury; typical old-fashioned mercury thermometers contain 400-500 mg.

All the State department releases have made it clear their primary concern was the Nebraska Sand Hills and it was routing the pipeline though this area that was ultimately rejected. TransCanada has been working on a reroute around this area since this part of the original route was shot down and the State Department wanted to keep the application open until TransCanada completed work on the new route.

McConnell pushed through a bill that said the pipeline must be approved or rejected by a specific date, but deliberately set that date long before TransCanada was even finished work on the new route. Since they couldn’t approve an non-existent route they were forced to reject the pipeline proposal but asked TransCanada to re-apply once they had a route. Unfortunately this creates significant delays since the whole approval process needs to start from the beginning rather than just having the State Department sign off on the route changes.

This is all made quite clear in both the official statements from both TransCanada and the State Department.

TransCanada is just now finishing its first pass at a route that doesn’t go though the sand hills. This will take time to evaluate and possibly modify before you could possibly make a decision on whether this re-route is acceptable.

In the fall, the State Department delayed a decision until early 2013 so TransCanada could work out the new Nebraska route.
Then, in January, it denied TransCanada a permit for the project, but left the door open for the company to apply for a new one.
The Obama administration said a Republican-imposed deadline to make a decision by Feb. 21 didn't allow enough time to adequately study the Nebraska reroute, so it had no choice but to reject the project.

Analysts say the Keystone will raise gasoline prices in the midwest by 20-30 cents.

WHY?

Because the oil that is here now and that feeds midwestern refineries is cheap because it cannot be transported to world markets easily.

Build the pipeline, and it is no longer cheap here because it is more valuable on the world market.

So, Conservatives; Why do you want to raise my gasoline prices? Is this the stated goal of Conservatism? :p

They should probably also stop the trucking and rail shipping of corn out of the heartland. As that will cause an inbalance in the midwest and keep corn prices down.

IMO, instead of sinking that cash into a pipeline, we should be building more nuclear reactors.
How does a private company(that is not in the business of building nuclear reactors) sinking cash into a pipeline have much effect on whether other money should be sunk into nuclear power.

I am sure that a lot of Mexican farmers would love to see the flood of cheaper American corn into Mexico cut off.

Not to worry, though, if the sludge line gets built. A major leak will eventually make agriculture in a lot of areas impossible.

Leaks WILL happen, unless the oil companies are firced under threat of siezure of assets to maintain their pipelines properly. Right now, they don't, if they can get away with it.

If the tens of thousands of miles of pipelines already running though these areas haven’t done this already why would a few hundred miles of new pipeline do it?

I( can think of at least six people killed within the past few years because pipelines were not properly tested for corrosion. The most recent, in California, happened because some dirtbag turned down the sensitivity of the PIG.

He should be in jail for murder, along with his whole chain of command.

The Canadian sludge is even more corrosive than most of what is being piped around the country now.

**** will happen.

OK, suppose you build a huge refinery in Alberta. Now what? How do the refined products get to market? Did you think that far ahead?
