Hoovervilles=1933. Obamavilles=2009!

Chuckle chuckle.

Apparently you think I have some say in what they get called.

But I've only started a thread on the subject.

Wait...okay...I say vut zee name iz at Midnight.

I thought you started this thread to make a crappy attack on Obama?

We can always check the OP:

Obamavilles are growing.

Redistribute the poverty!

Hmm... I can really see the deep, meaningful argument in that OP. Nope, I don't see any attacks on anyone based on ideology in this thread at all.

Face it mhaze, you can claim that you started a thread on "the subject" but as far as I can tell "the subject" isn't about the name of these tent cities, on the tent cities in general, or even why they are named what people are naming them. Instead you turned what could have been an interesting topic into an attack on someone who you don't like for ideological reasons. Nothing else.

You don't have a relevant opinion on the subject at all. In fact I would find it surprising if you could actually come up with one.

Oh and by the way, if you are going to try and claim "redistribute the poverty" is the issue then you've completely failed to prove your point anyway. The increase in tent cities does not mean that Obama, or anyone in general, wants to redistribute the poverty, or even wealth. If you are going to claim that you've made a valid point then themusicteacher has made a valid point in claiming that you are like Joe McCarthy. The only difference is that you have a link in your post.

I do believe one is called "New Jack City" by the people living there, so it appears that they are not really blaming Obama. See, the thing is that when people are just trying to get by that they expect more than partisan politics from everyone, and more of us to try and fix the problem.

The issue is that they exist, and not so much what to call them. Tent cities is fine, it identifies the problem. Pointing fingers at political figures does nothing for the situation and only moves it into the realm of parody which is not where it belongs.

Well one in Seattle was apparently named Nickelsville after the mayor who was known for clearing out homeless encampments.

However I think the name this "thread" is supposed to be about is more of an umbrella term for the cities, not for individual cities.

Good. Then we can proceed to discuss the how and why of more redistribution of porerty.

And why Google seems to show a clear preference for "Obamaville".

Apparently you think I have some say in what they get called.

I know I responded sincerely to this thread earlier, but for the last two days as I've checked my Subscription list I can't help but read the first part of the title as "Hootervilles" and have a different reaction.

Psst... I don't know if you noticed but I don't think you had any argument at all when you made this thread.

By the way, one of the reasons probably has to do with articles that use "Obamaville" that aren't referring to shanty towns, like this for example. Or this, or this. As well as youtube or myspace accounts.

And as far as I can tell pretty much everyone who is calling it an "Obamaville" seems to be of the disposition that the former president didn't actually do anything wrong. It's placing the blame on the feet of someone who doesn't actually deserve it.

Unless you want to change the name from "Hoovervilles" to "FDRvilles" or something along those lines?

It reminds me of some of the things that Liberal party members were trying to argue. That many different problems happening were the fault of Labor, even though they had only been in power for about a month.

So you really think these tent cities will come to be called something other than Obamavilles? I understand that many would like them to be called something different, but that isn't relevant, is it?

They sure look like.....Obamavilles.

Maybe we should poll the people living there? They have a right to name their new cities. This conversation is admittedly shear speculation.
Maybe you've read the "Grapes of Wrath" one too many times?...more likely the cliffnotes. Trust me, this downturn sucks BIG time, but jerks like you won't turn it around. @#$@#$%.

Obamavilles To the Left, Obamavilles to the Right

It was indeed a good book and I don't think your cliffnotes discusses engine repair methods, views about communists, bankers moving advanced tech (tractors) onto foreclosed farms, ad hoc development of law and culture in Hooverville, purchase of a loaf of bread for a dime in a restruant...wait , I digress! Now where were we?

We speak not here of villages of bums, past mental patients, and alcoholics who experienced the wrath of grapes, but of modern educated families, whose recourse is tent city life in increased numbers. Indeed an issue not to joke about. An embarrasing reality to Obamazoa.

But you still haven't explained how exactly this is Obama's fault, and why the cities should be named after him.

Well Google says that "Obamaville" has been used by many people for various reasons that may or may not have to do with tent cities, therefore Obama is to blame for all of the US's problems. Probably because he's a secret muslim-socialist-fascist who wants to turn the US into some sort of socialistic islamic theocracy where they take away your guns and execute you for being a christian and punish you for working and force you to have abortions and turn everyone gay!

But you still haven't explained how exactly this is Obama's fault, and why the cities should be named after him.
And I don't intend to, because it isn't material. Although I'll grant you one can explain logically the naming of many cities.

"Uh....Hey, let's name this place The Angels. They gotta place down south named after Saint Diego. And I hear up north they gotta place named after Saint Francisco."

Yeah....It's all really linear cause and effecticaba.

Meanwhile....Redistribute the poverty!

So in other words all this thread is to you is just a way to get off on your Obama hatred?

No. That may be the view of many here who seem quite defensive. I view the Obamavilles as an interesting cultural phenomena.

Shades of William Gibson's character "The Suit" - the Sprawl - The dystopic street society of Bladerunner. Where are we headed?

Back to an earlier failed assertion/snipe/insult:

Anyone read Grapes of Wrath?

It is very interesting you would still continue to use the term "Obamaville" as if is a commonly accepted term despite it being considered by many here to be polemic biased nonsense.

Yeah, you are a neutral person "just asking questions".
