Before learning of James Randi, I had no idea what Homeopathy was. I, probably like many others, assumed it was just an herbal remedy or alternative medicine. I did on a few occasions actually seek out homeopathic remedies instead of traditional over the counter remedies for simple things, like insomnia, cold/flu, etc…
In 2006 I found myself deeply depressed. After going to see my Dr. and then a Psychiatrist who gave me Zoloft and Xanax. A few weeks into my treatment, nothing had changed and a friend suggested I see her friend, a healer of some sort. I went to see her and she gave me some pills, that she claimed were shaken a million times or whatever and that it would cure me. She also tried to hypnotize me and do some sort of hypnotic regression or whatever it was. I didn't want to hurt her feelings so I reluctantly played along. Needless to say, her "therapy" was nothing more than talking to me, having me lay down and meditate, draw my feelings on paper. I didn't feel any better, actually I felt more confused about my condition. She gave me all of these homeopathic remedies for depression. After a few months my depression lifted and I was back to normal.
It was then that I started to actually investigate homeopathy. I learned of how ridiculous the claims were, how dilute the substances were, etc… and how would never use/buy and recommend to friends that's it's a waste of money. Whenever I hear Randi speak about homeopathy, it makes me wonder… If you dilute a substance according to homeopathy, it makes it more potent… If that was the case, couldn't you take Vodka, dilute it and make it more potent? Essentially a shot of vodka would probably yield you a lifetime supply of extremely powerful vodka. A single drop of this dilute vodka, according to homeopathy, should get you drunker right? I told a homeopath of what I had done, took a shot of vodka, diluted it with 10 shots of water and repeated it ten times. I also told her that the diluted vodka got me so drunk, drunker than I had ever been and she scolded me for using homeopathic practices just to achieve an intense inebriated state. She actually believed that I was getting drunker than I would have gotten had I just drank the vodka straight.
Either way, thank you Randi and to skeptical thinking I've learned a lot about these woo-woos.
