Home from Alaska!

Our trip home was mixed. We got across the border easy ( I expected to be scrutinized, but was not ), but we sat on the tarmac at Seatac for two hours while the mechanics replaced...
THE BLACK BOX
And now I'm nursing a stupid head cold. I suppose I shouldn't have been so smug about all those steri-wipe dispensers.
Ah, well...

I wound up with a cold on the last morning/trip home. I don't believe in hand sanitizers either and my cold was the result of being in the proximity of hundreds of strangers, not poo pooing the wipes IMO.

Also I just weighed myself on a medical scale and I'm tipping at 203 which is the first time I've been above 200 in a decade. I hope I can get back to 193 in the next few months.

I wouldn't be so sure of that.

The effect of hand hygiene on illness rate among students in university residence halls.
Results: The overall increase in hand-hygiene behavior and reduction in symptoms, illness rates, and absenteeism between the product group and control group was statistically significant. Reductions in upper respiratory-illness symptoms ranged from 14.8% to 39.9%. Total improvement in illness rate was 20%. The product group had 43% less missed school/work days.

Effect of hand sanitizer use on elementary school absenteeism.
Results: The overall reduction in absenteeism due to infection in the schools included in this study was 19.8% for schools that used an alcohol gel hand sanitizer compared with the control schools (P < .05). Data from the school system with the largest teacher population (n = 246) showed that teacher absenteeism decreased 10.1% (trend) in the schools where sanitizer was used.

Conclusion: Elementary school absenteeism due to infection is significantly reduced when an alcohol gel hand sanitizer is used in the classroom as part of a hand hygiene program. (AJIC Am J Infect Control 2000;28:340-6)

Tuesday morning and I'm still swaying. How long will it take for this to go away?

It's Thursday morning, and the cruise is STILL rocking my world!! It's not really troublesome, just a bit disconcerting.

Anyway here is the link to all my pictures....there are 404 pictures....don't panic I started with over 700. They are mostly captioned so don't forget to use that feature.
Part of the reason mine aren't up yet is that trying to weed out the best couple hundred from nearly 700 is an odious task...

My roomie, BoGardiner (Eileen), doesn't have enough posts for links yet, so asked me to post her pics. Here's the link!!

BoG - I checked at lost-and-found, and they did not have any cameras :(
I hope you were able to get most of your pictures saved!

Sorry, some viruses are indeed airborne, and some are spread hand to face. This one seems to move around, so I really have no clue as to how I contracted it. I just thought it was a bit ironic that my reaction to the steri-wipes was "I don't need to live in a sterile environment". Yes, there was alot of sneezing going on, and it could easily have been airborne, but then viruses are amazing little creatures. People all have different susceptibility.
But mostly I was being ironic.

You apparently didn't have enough of them. Or they were those fru-fru martini-like things. My grandfather & father never fail(ed) to take their "medicine" (scotch), and were & are two of the heathiest folks I've known!

For what it's worth, Martinis don't seem to sterilize the blood very well, either.

Speaking of which, I finally started breaking down near mid-week. Did anyone see me drink alcohol during the cruise? I tried being a good boy but I was having trouble getting to bed before 2am otherwise.

And for the record, Jami and I were marginally on speaking terms near the end of the week. Sunday at SeaTac I went off to grab a soda near my time to catch my flight and when I got back to where I left her she was gone off to the AA section of the airport.

Well I Never!

maybe it was buying a round for the childrens group US?

Who knew the drinking age at sea was 6 and up?

Here is a clip from my talk. It was AMAZING to have Randi in the front row.

ohhh, in watching that I now remember that I was supposed to change your power point slide when you nodded at me. I kept getting so caught up in your talk that I wouldn't notice you desperately gesturing for me to CHANGE THE DAMN IMAGE!!!

Look, Jeff just said, "oh Kitty sit here and just change the image when Richard tells you to." I didn't know when agreeing Richard was going to be so INTERESTING.

Whales, rainforests, glaciers, seabirds and magic, oh my! What more could a girl want??? Thank you for fine rooming (and god forgive me, jewelry shopping) with Goddess Naomi, wining and dining with Janet and Eric, cruising with Joe and Gina, hiking with Steve, bearlesswatching with Amazing Manager Jeff, whalewatching with Kitty, moon- and rainbow-watching with Phil and Marcella, city-touring with Mark, Meetup strategizing with Elaine and the Skeptical Cowboy, Cleon for a fun dinner as well, singing and dancing with many of you, worshipping at Randi's feet... even getting to know a few intrepid Alaskans...

Guess this new blood must flow to Fort Lauderdale...
