It isn't, technically, a race. But a lot of people who identify as hispanic would be rather put out at being excluded. And as for they put down what they think your race is after looking at you if you decline to answer... who came up with this, David Duke?!?

since there's no technical definition of race, I don't see how anyone can say something is or isn't "technically a race." "Mooninite" is just as much of a race as "black" or "Asian"

Honestly, if we list "Hispanic" on census and other statistical forms, we should also include North African/Middle Eastern, Persian, Indian sub-continent, and Central Asian.

Perhaps history as well as geography informs the decision of what categories to include on the form? The US has less need to differentiate between Lithuanians and Estonians than say, a Latvian census would.
