He's back! George Santos is running again.

Why wouldn't he run again, it was lucrative the first time. I wonder if he plans to use other people's credit cards again.
 
Sometimes, when hearing about this clown and his antics, I think that maybe I should have gone into politics when I was young. The bar to entry is much, much, much, much, much, much, much lower than I ever imagined.
 
He's back -- in the news -- but George may be going away for a while. Being reported today:
Former New York congressman George Santos is expected to plead guilty in his wide-ranging fraud case, according to US media reports. The Republican had pleaded not guilty last year. Mr Santos is expected to appear in court on Monday in Central Islip, New York and change that plea, a person familiar with the matter told CBS News, the BBC's US news partner. It is unclear which or how many charges he may plead guilty to.

He was facing a maximum prison sentence of 20 years if convicted on all counts.

I couldn't find a news report as to whether the plea deal is likely to result in no prison time or a minimal sentence. I guess we'll find out Monday. I'm leaning towards the judge imposing some prison time. Some of the charges involve some pretty egregious behavior,

Some of the criminal counts involve Santos having made unauthorized charges on his donors' credit cards. In one instance, Federal prosecutors say, Santos racked up $15,800 in unauthorized charges on a campaign contributor's card. Previously Santos had said he had no intention of paying any of the money back since that would be tantamount to admitting he was guilty. Now that he apparently will admit to being guilty, I wonder if Santos might agree to restitution? That might help him avoid a prison cell.
 
I think he gets somewhere between 3.5 to 5.5 years. In the sentencing guidelines, the fraud charges are a higher category than any campaign finance charge so the less level of offenses get rolled in. As frauds go it's pretty small (though it's hard to say exactly with the information available)so I went with about $1 million. If he accepts responsibility and makes restitution he drops a few points on the sentencing chart.

I don't know much about the victims. Not knowing the hardship he caused the victims it's hard to say if the judge would go for an upward departure (meaning add months in prison over what's in the guidelines). If he was charged for defrauding or fraudulently fundraising for the dogs for disabled veterans group (which I remember reading him doing something like that), in the category of upward departures, he's probably in a special tab called "completely ******".

Several of Santos victims have been interviewed, though not identified. One was a Republican donor who thought a "gay Republican" would be good for the Republican Party by establishing some diversity. In a Talking Points Memo news report in January 2023, this victim said:

Late in the 2020 election cycle, one regular Republican donor said they were getting bombarded with messages asking them to contribute to a New York congressional candidate named George Santos. “That kind of diversity for the party, I thought, would be good,” said the donor. “So, the next time someone from his campaign called, which was probably very soon after, I gave my credit card over the phone for a $1,000 donation.”

Santos lost the 2020 race soon afterward. However, the donor’s brief interaction with Santos’ first unsuccessful House bid was the beginning of a long odyssey that they said resulted in more than $15,000 in false credit card charges. Some of that money inexplicably went to the campaign of Tina Forte, another Republican congressional candidate in New York whose campaign had links to Santos. Talking Points Memo news link

This person does not require restitution as their credit card vendor, American Express, reversed the charges. They also contacted WinRed, listed as the entity that had processed the Santos' transactions.
“I contacted WinRed donor support because that was listed as the merchant on my Amex statement. That was a whole months-long process because they couldn’t find these transactions even though they were listed as the merchant,” the donor said. “They had no record of them in their system.”

Santos is the kind of kindred spirit that Trump would like to have in his cabinet. He can even point him and say, "Look at my gay guy!"
 
He wants to run Immigration and Customs Enforcement. :rolleyes:

George Santos (R-N.Y.), who was recently expelled from Congress, made a pitch on Tuesday to serve as former President Trump’s director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if Trump wins his bid to return to the White House in 2024. “My new year resolution is that President Trump returns to the white house and in 2025 I can be appointed Director of ICE,” Santos wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Enough abuse and disregard for our sovereignty, we are the United States OF America and not a global dumping hub. ICE has had their hands tied for far too long with the sole exception of the great four years of DJT,” Santos wrote, referring to Trump by his initials. The Hill news link

Associated Press reported a few minutes ago, from federal court in Central Islip Long Island:
George Santos, the former New York congressman who spun lies into a brief political career, pleaded guilty Monday to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, acknowledging that he allowed his ambitions to cloud his judgment. Santos, 36, is likely to spend at least six years in prison and owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution. His federal fraud case, which led to his expulsion from Congress, was just weeks away from going to trial. AP news link

Federal Judge Joanna Seybert accepted Santos' guilty plea and said she will sentence him next Feb. 7.
 
After beiing being expelled from Congress this is just sort of a cherry on top of a s___ sunday for Santos.
