Merged Here comes another Aurora Borealis

Whoa. That's spectacular. If only I'd thought to go down to the marina, instead of checking out my balcony... *sigh*

Well, there's due to be more of this over the next little while, right? Hopefully I'll get a glimpse :)

Maybe not in the next little while, but definitely in the next couple years.

When I lived in B'ham, I lived on Chestnut and Garden. Currently it is a work release jail house but when I lived there it was a rooming house. I had the room overlooking the bay. It was the first time I saw the planets like I was looking out on the elliptical plane. It sparked my interest in astronomy.

Sigh, there's another big storm and it's daytime and cloudy here. If you have clear skies and it is night where you are right now, go check the northern sky.

Naturally, there was a killer storm going on right as the clouds moved in. It's still going on but weaker and it's daytime here now. If it is dark where you are, go look north (or south for you Ozzies). G4 storm was in progress but it's down to G2 now. The storms will continue off and on for a few days now. There's a big sunspot still spitting flares at us.

Huge aurora, absolutely huge. But cloudy skies remain in this area. There are a couple clear nights coming up hopefully.
GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A strong-to-severe geomagnetic storm is in progress following the impact of a coronal mass ejection (CME) at approximately 12:15 UT on Sept. 26th. The Goddard Space Weather Lab reports a "strong compression of Earth's magnetosphere. Simulations indicate that solar wind plasma [has penetrated] close to geosynchronous orbit starting at 13:00UT." Geosynchronous satellites could therefore be directly exposed to solar wind plasma and magnetic fields. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for Northern and Southern Lights after nightfall.
Kp was up to 8 and is now back to 4. There was also ground current noted in Norway.

Keep looking up. ;)

I'm in Pennsylvania, roughly halfway between north and south borders. Been checking outside every hour, on the hour, and so far haven't seen anything. Though I hear it should peak around midnight.

Clouds, Go Away!!!

Mister Earl, go look right now if you are still up. Dang, it's stormin. Kp is back to 7.

It's another big one going on right this minute. If you are on the east coast and as far north as Ohio, go outside and look!

It's iffy here. We have a partially cloudy sky and it's a few more hours until it will be dark enough. The aurora might not last and the clouds could get thicker.

Or maybe..... :D

Cloudy here in NZ (41° S), so not too many hopes for this evening (it is 15:08 local as I type this).

BUT - we were in Canada a (edit: a couple of) month(s) ago when the last big CME hit. We saw the aurora then. :)

Incidentally, does anyone know why I can access the space weather website, but not the "more data" pages?? It is frustrating. The links seem active, but almost always fail for me.

There are so many links on the spaceweather.com page, which "more data" links are you referring to?

When I saw this thread about 30 minutes ago, I went outside and saw a red glow to the north. There was one spot that was pretty bright. If I hadn't seen this thread I might have dismissed it as being caused by a shopping center that's to the north of me. But the glow only lasted about 10 minutes, so that means it was probably the aurora. The shopping center is lit throughout the night.

How long does a display like this last?

I'm in PA, mid-latitude. Went outside on a smoke break, walked around the building to the north side, and didn't see anything. Too much light pollution. =\

Saw a great onte this morning when I went out to get the papers. Unfortunately, I was far to cold in my pyjamas to go out into the nearby fields and get away from the streetlights.
