Help! I'm a disgruntled gun owner/outdoorsman...

The solution is simple.
Just point out to the gun nuts (please note I am not referring to gun owners in general, but the Teddy Nugent section) that the NRA is nothing more than a union for gun owners to belong to.
And yet most members of the NRA are probably anti union.

Thern you can call them commies for being in a union, just like they would! :D

And like any big union they are happy to take your dues and fight hard for your rights.

Of course the rights most other unions are fighting for aren't already constitutionally protected.

I guess I didn't know how good I had it. A couple of times a year I go to look around the county's largest used and antique gun store. They have a strictly enforced dress code which states that no racist or offensive shirts may be worn in the store.

Still, the fact that they need a sign says something. You don't have a sign up prohibiting things that never happen.

"WARNING: Absolutely NO leaving behind sacks of money on this doorstep! Unauthorized donations strictly forbidden!"

:p

Non-insane gun owner here. Not much to add, other than a +1. I've owned "assault rifles" and handguns and combat shotguns most of my life. Now I just own a maverick 88 pistol grip 12 gauge for home defense, but I am looking into getting a Beretta 96FS to replace it. I vote a straight democrat ticket because I know that the dems won't touch gun control again after what happened in the 1994 mid terms, especially considering how much the pendulum has swung toward gun rights since. For the most part I avoid other gun enthusiasts and i don't converse with people in gun shops about anything other than the price, and I have walked away from deals before after informing the seller that I'm not interesting in buying from them because they can't shut up about their politics.

I really hate the fact that so many hunters embrace that stupid, whinny ass poacher.

But yes, fairly liberal here and a gun enthusiast. A poor one, but still. Luckily the places around here seem to be pretty much free of political talk. That might be because the gun culture in this area cuts across so much of the population.

I thought his popularity was to show their support of violent political rhetoric and contempt for the law?

You don't know that. There are many men with honor that would join up without killing each other to make a new life. I didn't say guns would save us...but they would allow us to hunt deer, and other wildlife to feed out families.

And when they start starving? They hunt and eat people out side the group.

Yet another gun-lovin', NRA-hatin' American patriot.

There are quite a few positive gun threads here. We also have this thread which gets revived every deer season.

I spent all day last Saturday cutting shooting lanes for my stands and setting up blinds. In case some of you missed it, here's the highlights of last season for me.

I just put a new Leupold 4.5-14x50 scope on that .270 so hopefully I can do as well this year.

Liberal gun owner here. I work in Oil & Gas, a bastion of conservative redneckedness... Two coworkers went out and bought numerous guns and ammo when the President was first elected because "he's going to take away all our guns!" I told them that there are too many of us liberals who like our guns and wouldn't put up with government trying to take them away, as well as the fact that the government had more important things, like the economy, to deal with when they went into office. Now the two coworkers are thinking that if the President is re-elected he'll definitely come after the guns. (All of which I believe, is due to the gun industry spreading rumours for financial gain.)

A couple of weeks after the last presidential election, before the President had been sworn in, I was driving through El Campo, Texas and there was a giant, flashing sign pointing to a pawn shop that read "Get your guns now before Obama's Weapons Ban!" People are idiots and others are opportunists taking advantage of the idiots...

Haven't they noticed they won and gun control is just not a major issue? Why do they need the persecution complex?

Unfortunately, no. They're rather racist to begin with so a black man in the White House is a bad thing to begin with. Add to that their belief that he's a Muslim, born in Kenya and they're so far down the rabbit hole, I'm not sure they'll ever get back out. They're so sure that everybody's out to get what they see as their's.

The older one did say a couple of months ago that he was starting to maybe consider that the Republicans were just doing everything they could to keep the President from getting a second term and in doing so that they were really hurting the country. I thought that was a big step for him...

And of course, they're very fundamentalist Christian. When my daughter was diagnosed with Lupus, they had their church pray for her and they signed us up for a meet and greet with their Chiropractor. We went because we felt that they were genuinely concerned for The Dolly, but were not inclined to fall for the "we can cure your auto-immune disease" crap, which got worse when the "Doctor" told us that he could cure ADHD and Multiple Sclerosis - in the same sentence... Interestingly enough, after we came back and told them it was freaking ridiculous that the guy was claiming to cure MS and treating one day old babies, they did some soul-searching and stopped having chiropractic treatments. As well as paying hundreds of dollars a month for supplements which were supposed to cure them of all their ills.

Honestly, I think that unless people are subjected to opinions from people outside their own little realm, it's so easy to get caught up in the herd mentality. Then someone comes along and gets them to question their reasonings and their belief structure just falls apart. But unless you're willing to venture out of your own little comfort zone in regards to listening to others opinions, it's way to easy to turn an opinion into a perceived fact.

I'm not sure where to post this; I figure since the meat of the matter in firearm related, along with the political backlashes, it would go here. Mods feel free to move it if needed.

So, I'm a gunowner, supporter of the Second Amendment, and bowhunter. Over the last few years my enjoyment of shooting and hunting has diminished considerably. Every firearm forum I visit, every gun store, outdoors store or archery pro shop I go into is populated with the same kinds of individual. The anti-Obama, born-in-Kenya, U.N./government-coming-to-get-our-guns paranoid Christian conservative that thinks Waco and Ruby Ridge were outrages (maybe so) and that Koresh and Weaver were heroes (not idiots and felons). They feel that any anti-gun news story is an immediate overreach by the Feds, a conspiracy, etc.

Obviously not all of them are like this, but the vast majority are. I have become ashamed of my fellow gun enthusiasts and outdoorsmen. They wallow in demagoguery fed to them by the NRA, paranoia sites such as PrisonPlanet, WND, etc. So disgruntled have I become that the hobbies I used to enjoy are being soured by the rhetoric. Almost all are conservative republicans, so any independant (or democrat/liberal) is instantly vilified.

Am I the only one? I come to this forum for the intelligent, rational conversation and insight.

What say you all?

Let me put it like this:

I like heavy metal, but I pretty much hate the people in the crowds that show up to the concerts.

Enjoy your guns, you don't have to shoot with knuckleheads; OTOH I can never go to a metal show with no ******** there.

Very true.

I wasn't trying to say the gun owners in my city were more civilized and rational; I was trying to say that the gun store was more civilized.

You've been watching too many science fiction movies.
