Help! I'm a disgruntled gun owner/outdoorsman...

At least some of the paranoia is the fault of the Democrats themselves. Putting a "Chicago" politician in the White House knowing what Chicago's history is regarding legislating gun ownership in general made this kind of paranoia pretty much a sure thing even if it is only imagined. Perception is not always 100% reality based and it doesn't help that his past voting history in the Illinois legislature regarding guns in general was not all that friendly towards gun owners. But then again if he was representing his district and that's what they wanted then it was his job to vote the way that he did so it may or may not reflect his own views on the matter.

I think that he's doing the job as President that he swore to do and that he supports the 2nd amendment regardless of his own personal views on the matter (which I really don't know nor do I care as long as he keeps it out of the job) and I have no reason to think that he's going to change his current policies on the matter anytime soon.

Put me down in the "gun-owning anti-NRA" column.

Too pushy for my tastes. The hysteria they create is useful to me, though, in that my employer sells more guns and ammo than anyone in Wisconsin. We sold over a million dollars worth of guns in the week following the last Presidential election. And when Wisconsin passed the concealed weapons law, we crushed those sales numbers.

It's been a good couple of years. The best is yet to come. When all these goons realize that the gubmint isn't going to take their guns, and that walking around all day with thirty-five ounces of lead and steel in your britches is a real pain in the ass, the used gun market will go gangbusters.

$300 1911's, anyone? :D

I would suggest you dis-associate yourself with these sites. Clearly you are dealing with a noisy minority who are eroding your enjoyment of your sport and hobby.

You have made an informed decision about gun politics in America, you should not feel you have to defend that opinion to enjoy your recreation.

Yeah, I know; good point.

I've thought about it, and have at times not posted at the site for about 6 months or so. And it's not so much defending the opinions as it is just being associated with these knuckleheads.

I definitely know what you mean. I wouldn't be surprised if I have the largest gun collection of anybody in my state that is not a right wing wacko.

Well it seems a couple of people have recommended some moderate gun ownership site, so maybe those folk will be a bit more accomodating

Just because you love guns doesn't mean you're right wing. It is my opinion that every man worth his salt should know how to hunt and gather food, in case this civilization of ours goes away.

I'm afraid I don't understand your question.
My comment was specifically about the racist laws that laid the groundwork for current anti-gun propaganda campaigns such as the ones that lost in court in Chicago and DC, and the irony... not about your personal feelings about guns.

Politics isn't real life, it just messes up real life.

Democrat,Think Koresh was a nut who needed killing,as do a lot like him, have guns (knives, spears........), no interest in NRA or republickers.

If it all just "goes away" it's likely that your guns and ammunition will be used to shoot other people trying to survive the dissolution of civilization.

It wouldn't be pretty. And it's wishful thinking to believe that your guns would save you.

You don't know that. There are many men with honor that would join up without killing each other to make a new life. I didn't say guns would save us...but they would allow us to hunt deer, and other wildlife to feed out families.

My experience is similar. I lean to the liberal side on most issues, and I own guns and enjoy shooting. I belong to a very large regional gun club, mostly because of the range privileges. I used to enjoy dropping in on a couple of local gun stores to see what's new, but for the past few years it has become a much less pleasant experience. The gun store owners tack offensive political cartoons, bumper stickers, and such on their bulletin boards. Much of it seems driven by anger, and some is downright racist. And the good old boys who hang out at these stores talk like paranoid conspiracy theorists.

Now I buy most of my ammo at WalMart. And for guns, parts, and accessories, I do all my pre-shopping online. Then I drop in the gun store, make my purchase, and move along.

I think it's been scientifically established that conservatives are, on average, significantly more irrationally fearful than the general population. They're afraid bad people (gangs, terrorists, foreigners, immigrants, liberals, whatever) are out go get them, so they take emotional comfort in guns, racism, religion, militarism, government authoritarianism and whatever else promises to keep them safe from the bad people.

It's pretty obvious that the NRA and the extreme right wing are well aware of this tendency in their base and play on it.

That doesn't mean that everyone who likes guns is irrationally fearful. Just that people who are irrationally fearful are going to be drawn to guns.

Well, people with guns would be one step ahead of those without guns.

If you have a box of Cheerios and I have a box of Cheerios and a gun, whose Cheerios is Lord Humungous of the Wastelands going to be eating tonight?

Hint: Probably not mine.

Still, better to have the guns than not.

Any reason we're talking about The End Of The World As We Know It already??

Not really germane to the OP, unless you're trying to live up to the stereotype...

I wonder if the solution is to try to bring in more of another kind of person yourself... invite friends with more moderate points of view, etc.
