For the PLO, Hamas, and most "peace" activists, the "occupied lands" were always, as they say, "all of Palestine, from the river to the sea".

ETA: Wikipedia says there were 180-240 thousand Jews in Poland shortly after the war ended, and that 100-120 thousand left between 1945 and 1948. So depending on when in 1948 we talk about, there could be as little as 60-120 thousand Jews in Poland in 1948.

Anyway, looking at the numbers, I'm clearly mistaken about Poland, and that many Israeli Jews most likely did come from here, although many also left for the USA.

I'm an Israeli and a reserve soldier in the IDF. I also worked and studied on American college campuses. In both capacities I've met (though "confronted" or "argued with" is better perhaps) not one, but many "peace activists".

With some exceptions, they are supporters of the destruction of Israel, either through plain ignorance (e.g., thinking the "right of return" means anything except the destruction of Israel) or else by real hatred (as with the folks who simply scream how Israel must be destroyed by the "freedom fighters" of Hamas & co.)

This is because the average (again, there are exceptions) "peace" activist simply doesn't believe Israel has a right to exist, and thinks it is an illegitimate colonialist enterprise. Certainly most of them seem to think the Jews should just "go back where they came from" -- Europe.

Yes, more than half the Jews in Israel today have their origins in the Levant, but the average "peace activist" simply doesn't know or care; that ruins the "evil colonialist enterprise" worldview, and nothing so mundane as facts gets past that worldview.

Just to clarify something from the OP that might be confusing - Helen Thomas works for Hearst News Service corporation, covering the White House. She is a private citizen not a member of the US administration.
