Heard any good rape jokes lately?

So this comedian (Daniel Tosh) was telling rape jokes when he was heckled by an audience member and he joked that "wouldn't it be funny if this woman was raped?". If you are like me you are wondering how does one know when it is appropriate to joke about otherwise terrible things. So far all I've come up with is "be funny". But doesn't that beg the question?

Daniel Tosh, Rape Jokes and Hecklers

So, what do you think?

Theres a cartoon video called rape ghost on youtube. Its superficially funny until you realise it isn't

Yeah, that might be a good heckle from Tosh, "You got a problem with rape? Huh huh huh, must be gay!"

Yup, that's exactly the premise of that joke.

Or, the premise is that three rapists who are chosen to go home but who were going to rape a woman were chosen on the criteria of not being too into it in the first place. It's like when all your friends want to go dancing at a club, and you are going to go to despite not being into clubs, but then when there aren't enough seats in the car you opt out.

Or the premise is that it would be an absurd conclusion to come to given the information.

Of those three possibilities, which do you think I was going for?

If you are that easily disturbed, then perhaps a discussion board is no more appropriate a place for your delicate sensitivities than an adult comedy show is for the lady that disrupted the show.

You are equating being disturbed and saying so with being able to HANDLE being disturbed. You disturb me but don't flatter yourself. You aren't important to me and I'm sure I'm not to you. I don't leave a movie theater just because there is a annoying gnat flying around.

She paid money to attend a show where it is expected that off-color, controversial issues will be made light of - and then disrupts the event because the performer did exactly what was expected of him.

My understanding was that he was the opening act so she had paid to see someone else. (Not a hugely relevant point but still worth mentioning.) Also, she was responding to an audience member (loudly of course) initally and Tosh jumped in between.

She is the villain in this story, and she deserves nothing more than the derision she got.

If you read my earlier posts you'd know that I think she shouldn't have disrupted the show. That being said, stories can have more than one villain (though "villain" is way too inflammatory). They were both boneheads in different ways. Neither of them should be in the spotlight because what they did was unimportant. They shouldn't get derision, they should get an eyeroll.

Good grief.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. I disapprove of what you feel, and I will assault to the death your right to feel it."

Ah - a false quote AND a strawman. Do you feel entitled to lie, so long as your angst is sincere?

There is something ironic about you (of all people) in this thread (of all threads) treating an obviously sarcastic remark as if it were real.

My opinion is pretty boring really. People should be entitled, socially and legally, to be offended. You on the other hand, would "literally" and forcefully remove those thoughts from society. That disturbs me because you are the one yearning for thought police. Not me, not Tosh, and not the female audience member. Granted, it's not the dreaded "politically correct" (*sinister thunderclap*) thought police that you have nightmares about but it is certainly something just as bad.

Edit: Lest I be accused of falsely quoting you...

That one may form such an opinion does not mean one is entitled to it. I would strip it from their skulls (literally) if I could.

I would have found it hilarious and if I had encountered the woman after the show I would have made sure she knew it. She heckled him. She is therefore scum worthy of scorn, derision and a lifetime of emotional torment if at all possible.

I can't stand hecklers. I have threatened many after a show because they are truly a class of people that I would be entirely cool with the government just summarily executing them. But not quickly with a bullet to the head because that is too good for them. No they get some horrible drawn out death like scaphism......Google it.

That is a truly stupid comment; and way to behave.

I wonder; did anyone at the time insist that the black guy who interrupted Michael Richards's racist tirade was wrong to interrupt the "act" and/or deserved to be executed for heckling?

Of course.

I was thinking the guy was a jackass and Richards obviously called him something much worse. ;)

People treat racism like it's the worst possible thing in the world. Maybe cause of social pressures or the association with slavery, which was a truly great evil and one of the worst sins a human can commit. But it's just something that is wrong. Not OMG worst thing ever.

So I saw it on youtube knowing he would say something racist but took the whole thing in context. The black guy was being a jerk and Richards in a pathetic attempt to be funny used racial slurs like crazy.

I'll translate a Dutch joke.

A guy is driving along and encounters a police roadblock
He stops and rolls down the window and asks a policeman what the fuss is about
The policeman replies
''We're looking for a serial rapist''
The guy says
''Not me''
''On your way''
Five minutes later the guy turns up again at the roadblock, rolls down his window and says
''I've changed my mind, I'll do it.''

How incredibly ignorant.

What gives her the right to heckle a comedian? People paid good money to listen to him, not her. Disgusting behavior.

Apples and oranges. Tosh built a name and following based on his raunchy, insensitive and edgy material both in his stand-up act and on his show. Richards made his name in large part by playing lovable goofy characters in tv and film. That audience for Richards had no reasonable expectation that he would go off like he did.

I liken the situation to going to see both Andrew Dice Clay and Bill Cosby perform back in the day. I expect to hear all sorts of crude jokes from Clay, but from Cosby? Not so much...

Humor like Tosh's is at heart self deprecating. When it's an actual mysoginist or bigot making these jokes, there is no dissaproval of the act being joked about. When someone like Tosh does it, it's not intended to condone the acts at all, it's intended to make you cover your face and shake your head and share in how wrong it is to say such a thing.
It's supposed to be ironic.

But whether I think it's funny or not, people need to get over it. Nothing should be off limits to humor. Humor is not just about mocking and belittling, it's many more things than that.
I think that is a fair point. Nothing about Tosh strikes me as being a bully and intimidating people. His web redemption's actually give people who have been mocked on youtube a chance to redeem themselves a bit.

wow and I thought Travis was harsh on pot smokers. Clearly, issues. Travis, the past is over. You can relax now.

I remember telling a skeptic in the forum that Carl Sagan was a fan of pot and they suddenly lost respect for him. The idea of drugs just weirds out some people. I don't get it.

A farmer goes to a livestock dealer and buys an anvil, a bucket, two chickens, and a goose. The farmer looks at his purchases and says, "Damn, I WALKED here. How am I gonna carry all this home?"

The livestock dealer said, "Why don't you put the anvil in the bucket, carry the bucket in one hand, put a chicken under each arm and carry the goose in your other hand?"

"Hey, thanks!" the farmer said, and off he went. While walking home he met a little old lady who told him she was lost. She asked, "Can you tell me how to get to 1515 Mockingbird Lane?"

The farmer said, "Well, as a matter of fact, I live just down the road from there. Let's take my short cut and go down this alley. We'll be there in no time."

The little old lady said, "I am a lonely widow without a husband to defend me. How do I know that when we get in the alley you won't hold me up against the wall, pull up my skirt, and ravish me?"

The farmer said, "Holy smokes lady! I am carrying a bucket, an anvil, two chickens, and a goose. How in the world could I possibly hold you up against the wall and do that?"

She replied, "Set the goose down, cover him with the bucket, put the anvil on top of the bucket ... and I'll hold the chickens."

(Taken verbatim from here).

Can't you just make a new thread for your off-topic, pornographically violent fantasies? That way if someone else gets off on them they won't have to search through dozens of different threads to find them all, and the rest of us can have threads without them.

On topic, I don't mind the one that goes "Officer, I've been graped!". ("Don't you mean raped ma'am?" "No officer, there were a bunch of them!").

Knowing how the citizens of some countries are about not hurting poor widdle harmless rapists, murderers, etc. does not preclude my loathing them and wishing them grievous and permanent bodily harm (that's an "I really do not care Kevin." in case you misunderstood it). By the by, pornography is, by default, the writing of prostitutes so let's leave that term in the area it belongs.
