Having children in today's society

Truth. Although someone may be working on their heartfelt Feb nom.

Practice, practice, practice.

I could kind of go for my kids looking to give a **** what we think of them once in a while, though. Beats hearing how much better we could have done by them.

Yeah, it is weird the things your kids remember from childhood. You spend thousands of dollars over decades on experiences and goods, and they remember that one summer you promised them something minor and then they didn't get it. **** off with that **** and go mess up your own kids!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say her kid disagrees. No kid thinks their parent is pretty cool.

I think it's pretty obvious that Anita Doth sheds beams of radiant coolness at all times, therefore anyone in her presence cannot mistake her for not being the sum totality of cool. Hers is the jeweled flame of awesomnity, and the universe spirals around her ineffable existence!! There is nothing else, only Anita Doth!!! Need I remind you that for her "no no, no no no no, no no no no, no no there's no limit"? TREMBLE BEFORE HER GLORY! Or don't, and be like a real jerk or something.

I mean, that does seem to be my default.

Without doing any actual searching, there was a prior thread in the last year or so in which theprestige made a good defense of the moral argument against having kids. I disagreed with his argument, but it was well laid out, IIRC.

I did hear they are raising the tax credit to over $3k. That'll likely lead to a baby boom.

I have kids and they are approaching the age we were when we had them. (That is not a good sentence, sorry if you had to re-read it.) They don't want kids, and I don't think I did either when I was their age.

But then after a few years of being married without kids we wanted kids. It wasn't like I was against them before hand, more of a "not yet" sort of thing. Until it just seemed like there was never going to be a good time, so why not now.

I hope my kids have kids because I am selfish and would love to have grandkids to play with. But ,more importantly, I hope my kids make those choices free of consideration of what I want. I can't stand people who live their life in some quest to make mom or dad proud, or to fulfill some family legacy. That is just sickening to me. I would be so ashamed of my kids if they did something solely to make me proud or to fulfill my desires above theirs.

Man, I'm not trying to **** on my own parents because they are fantastic in many ways, but if they'd EVER in my life said or thought anything resembling the highlighted, I would have way fewer issues and would probably be at least a little more open to the idea of having my own kids.

Ah yes, I think I remember that one. And if I recall, I was dooming it up in there, too. Broken record, I am.

I need a new hobby.

(I do feel it necessary to note that I am not an antinatalist, as I have been called a few times in the past. Antinatalists believe that no one should have kids. I don't feel qualified to hold such large-scale beliefs about what other people should do, or about what the future holds. I'm just a simple anti-Butterist.)

If people don't have kids, then who will we have May-December romances with when they're adults and we're elderly? When I'm 85 my 25 year old boyfriend will have been born in 2036.

Well, if I ever do have a son, and he blossoms into your type, I'd be honored for you to **** him.

My issue is more the idea that just not having kids requires any justification beyond "I don't want to."

The whole "Here's a list of fifty bajillion reason I'm not having kids" even if the reasons are perfectly honest and valid still plays into the idea that having kids is the default, something that has to be vigorously defended and justified.

That's why I always get annoyed when the "Human Extinct Movement" types show up in discussion about simple personal choices in child rearing.

My mom tried to put a lot of that pressure on me and my siblings but I think my dad sort of passively undermined it. He had a lot of the pressure of expectations on him as a kid and he never seemed happy about it. In hindsight, he just had other **** distracting him, but not chiming in on mom's BS was a bit of a gift. Still, my brother can not tell my mom anything she won't like. It doesn't really impact his actions, just his words.

Another reason your cult isn't really taking off.

Truly baffled by the people scratching their heads when people choose to not have children as we increasingly slide into austerity.

Kids are expensive and there's basically no government support for people who have them. My wife and I do fine financially, but would struggle if either one of us dropped out of the labor force to raise any kids, even if it were just short term until we could shove them off to daycare, which is also very expensive.

We're doing better than many and expect (well, before covid anyway) to have all student loans payed off by the time we're entering our mid 30's.

We have a kid already, it's called student debt.

I read the title of this thread.

I (barely) skimmed one or two reply's. (Not really all that interested.)

Based on how I feel today, my answer would be: No.

No children. (I've had 5 in my lifetime, that I know of. Only four are still walking the Earth.)

If I knew then, what I know now, I never would have brought any children into this world.

For whatever reason, if any at all, life took its course.

Even when I intended, and wanted to have control, Life did what it did. End of story.

Doesn't really matter what I feel or think or write about it.

I’m glad we hand kids and they are having kids. Our children are all leading fulfilling lives and the future looks good.

Maybe it is because we are in Australia and have barely been touched by covid, and the economy is recovering nicely. Things are far from perfect, but it’s still a pretty good place to be.

Why have kids only to have to ship them off to a daycare centre for the entire day, nearly every day? Why have kids when they're so expensive and all you get to do is say good morning and good night to them? And why have kids and then be unable to deal with them when you actually do get to interact with them and celebrate on facebook when they go back to school and you don't have to interact with them any more.

Not all these reasons apply to everyone, of course. And some societies incentivise having children more then others. It often seems to me that some people have kids in response to biological imperative alone and really don't actually want and can't actually deal with, the utterly enormous responsibilty and commitment involved.

YMMV, of course.
