As crazy as it sounds, if the UK drilled for more gas, it could lower its carbon emissions over the next decade or so, compared to what we are projected to emit.

As it would reduce LNG imports which are horrendous for methane leakage.
 
We (East Colorado) just shattered our all time record high for March (was 81 F, now at least 83 and climbing)
There should be two feet of snow outside. Pikes Peak is usually 10+ feet of snow right now but it is getting bare fast, and it is the water supply for all the towns here. There is a huge wildfire just south of here, fires like this usually don't happen til June. So once all the forests burn down, Guess the lack of vegetation will make it even warmer...we're doomed.
ETA: 86 now... a full 5 degrees above the pervious record high for March, this is even well above normal July temperatures!

Could, but won't. Reason being it will be drilled by parties interested in profit and the profits will almost certainly be higher on the international market rather than local so the shipping leakage would just get worse.

Unlikely when Europe is a net importer of fossil fuels, meaning that pipelines are the likely route for any gas we drill for . LNG will be for nearly all imports rather than exports, so leaves would be minimal for any new gas the UK finds.
 
All time U.S. record for March was set yesterday...112 degrees F in CA and AZ. Old record was 110 in 1954.
Pretty much every high record was set yesterday across the western U.S., including here in CO, locally we were 6 degrees above the all time previous record, and it hit 91 degrees in Fort Collins, in *northern* Colorado.
Not a peep in the headlines of any MSM outlet I've seen, as if this isn't a significant story. The usual responses (all of which are insane) from the denialists will be: 1) This is natural variation 2)The sun is active 3)Chemtrails/HAARP.
Meanwhile,the AMOC is shutting down, sea ice is rapidly disappearing, which all could mean we are fundamentally ◊◊◊◊◊◊.

The Earth's climate is further out of balance than at any time in recorded history, the UN's weather agency has warned.
The World Meteorological Organization says that our planet is gaining much more heat energy than it can release, driven by emissions of warming gases such as carbon dioxide.
This record "energy imbalance" heated the ocean to new heights last year and continued to melt our planet's ice caps.
And scientists fear that a natural warming phase called El Niño – expected to begin later this year - could soon bring further heat records.

Sadly, our present government is remarkably dumb as well, especially where renewable energy is concerned. We have an endless-ish coastline, and very few offshore wind farms, we're sparsely populated, and yet there are comparatively few wind/solar farms. It's mostly a nimby problem (which is funny, since there are no backyards at all in such huge areas of Sweden), but also an ideological one; renewables are anathema to our brown shirts, who only want more nuclear power. Never mind the costs of building new plants, or that it will take decades.

In that case, future generations are just as dumb as the current ones!
"Our generations" were fooled by Big Oil and other capitalists and their paid politicians and pretend researchers. They're the ones we should 'do something' about. I think the full picture will be easier to see for future generations. It usually is.

Exactly. Even David Suzuki, one of Canada's foremost voices on climate change for years has admitted the battle is lost. Feedback loops have started and we will not stop this spiral. Now our attention must turn to mitigating the effects of both a changing climate and the massive changes it will bring to our societies, including mass migration on a scale that dwarfs what we see today.

I made the decision about 20 years ago not to have any children because I am firmly of the opinion that we are well past the peak of human civilization and will only decline from here. A birth control malfunction changed my plans. Some day when my daughter is old enough she will look me in the eye and ask me why. Why, when the problem was so obvious and so well known and documented, did previous generations including myself choose to kick the can down the road and trade away her future for short term gains. I honestly don't have an answer for her.
