Global warming discussion IV

Climate change is almost incidental to the parlous state of our oceans. Industrialised fishing, litter, pollution, agricultural run-off, it's abuse on an epic scale and can only end in an "oh crap" moment to end them all. Literally.

Stop!,...you are just trying to make me feel better,...it worked! :)

Is this in any way normal? I saw it on my feed this morning.

If you can't see it, it's a pond on a golf course in Canada, looking like a geyser but smelling like propane.

Sure doesn't look normal. Looks freakin scary. Word on the street is methane is bubbling up like this all over the world. Deniers will claim it's normal. Fear mongers will say we're all doomed.

Truth is no doubt somewhere in the middle, but if I came across that I'd be running for the hills.

Presumably if it was permafrost melting then previously it would have had to have been cold enough to freeze that but not the pond itself?

A pocket of gas has obviously formed, which suggests a clay layer on top of peaty gunk decaying anaerobically. One day it gives way and whoosh. Or not, whatever. Just as long as it's not in my garden I really don't care. Foreign parts are well known to be strange.

Propane (as much as methane, ethane and butane) has no odour.

It's also impossible for such volumes of gas to draw volatile sulfones from that tiny pond -or petrichor like compounds from the ground- to produce a propane-like scent. Either some piping broke in the vicinity -hence the odour-, or any mass of gas built -hardly methane, and if methane, not necessarily from a "permafrost" that could be in the antipodes- and the hysterical public -including the homme de ménage with the 249$ electronic Swiss army knife- was drove to believe that, indulged in mutual-suggestion (once I was prevented to access the block where my home was during three hours because a little electrical burning in a subterranean medium voltage transformer had driven a bunch of women into shrieking there were gas leaks in all of their apartments -and they aggressively swore that to be true and, of course, like full-fledge neurotics, they didn't apologize once they were proven to have been utterly wrong-).

The Earth crust is farting more times a day than lightnings strike it. Nothing to watch, move on, move on, to the next kitten video.

addendum

It's not like we're field hands in a troll farm!!!

Whole Grains!

ethanol!

It's a subliminal monkey thing.

eh, eh,...eh, eh!
;)

"addendum - taste testing of ethanol is not an approved federal qualitative fuel assessment guideline factor."

Subliminal Monkey is my favorite Imagine Dragons cover band. :)

I don't know about California but the El Nino seems to have turned off the tap for rain in Victoria.

Here something related with how that WWB is going to create a new Kelvin Wave which in turn is going to drive warm waters even more westwards -to the Niño4 region-

And beware because South-east Asia and Australia droughts may extend and worsen.

It's a monster!

And I hope this based on CFSv2 is wrong for August

otherwise a near-record El Niño of about 2.5 is coming, and by Xmas the fires will be blazing entire parishes.

Good. This country needs a wake up call.

But the coal lady-tycoon is making extraordinary profits with the coal value up because of the drought all throughout the big region. She certainly can spare some tens of millions to subsidize the cats that promote denialism there.

Maybe a few typhoons will provide some "relief" during the next month or two -not in temperate Australia during Winter, I'm afraid- as the MJO index is going record (another graphic that had to be widened lately because of the record values -one year ago, the axis ended in 2.5-):

Is this years el Nino likely to be as big as the one in 97-98?
