I love the "...The claim made headlines around the world, but yesterday it emerged that GISS’s analysis – based on readings from more than 3,000 measuring stations worldwide – is subject to a margin of error."

As if the underlined portion was a big "gotcha" moment! LOL
For AGW deniers it is, since their world is one of absolute truths and inerrant authorities. A "complex and nuanced version of reality" is not to their taste at all.

I'm not a reporter myself, I just report the reporters, but the reporters I know report that David Rose is regarded as particularly stupid by other reporters.

Unfortunately, with the GOP firmly entrenched in the House and now in control of the Senate, we won't see much done on climate change.

Won't be much done at all by either house as Obama will throw any legislation back and continue as he has been fully on executive power....they can gnash their teeth all they want....

May 31, 2014 - Using Executive Powers, Obama Begins His Last Big Push on Climate ... and he personally urged his Environmental Protection Agency chief, ...

CLIMATE CHANGE
AND PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ACTION PLAN

THE UNITED STATES IS LEADING GLOBAL EFFORTS TO ADDRESS THE THREAT OF CLIMATE CHANGE. WIND POWER HAS TRIPLED, AND ENERGY FROM THE SUN HAS INCREASED TENFOLD. U.S. CARBON EMISSIONS HAVE FALLEN BY 10 PERCENT FROM 2007 TO 2013 – THE LARGEST ABSOLUTE EMISSIONS REDUCTION OF ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. TO BUILD ON THAT PROGRESS, PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS TAKEN A SERIES OF AMBITIOUS STEPS TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE.

In June 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed the Clean Power Plan – the first-ever carbon pollution standards for existing power plants that will protect the health of our children and put our nation on the path toward a 30 percent reduction in carbon pollution from the power sector by 2030. Power plants are the largest single source of carbon pollution, accounting for about one-third of all domestic greenhouse gas emissions. The Clean Power Plan will set standards for carbon pollution from power plants, just as we have set limits on power plant emissions of arsenic, mercury, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and soot.

In November 2014, in a historic joint announcement with China, President Obama laid out an ambitious but achievable target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States in the range of 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025, while China announced its intent to peak carbon emissions around 2030 and to double its share of zero-carbon energy to 20 percent. The announcement was a historic step for climate change action and for the U.S.-China relationship, as the world’s two largest economies, energy consumers, and carbon emitters came together to demonstrate leadership on an issue that affects the entire world.

Just from a science perspective it demonstrates the sheer scale of the problem faced in gaining broad-based public understanding of this type of problem. I can't say for certain exactly how old I was when I first learned and understood the meaning of MoE and why it was important to the accuracy of a statistical analysis, but I do have a HS paper from my sophomore year that uses the term repeatedly and has a paragraph dedicated to explaining its meaning. Of course, I went to those "horrible anti-science" religious schools throughout my primary education.

The term "surface to air" springs to my mind, but I'm not one for nuance myself.

You lost me, but I'm a little slow lately,...(and in this day and age I try not to make potentially misconstrue-able MANPAD jokes! I hate it when fatherland security shows up, they are so lacking in humor)

I actually think that a phased application of carbon taxes might be an easier way to begin implementing these and gaining public acceptance of these for special applications, especially in the U.S. where there is such a near taboo stigma on all things labeled "taxes." Additionally, it will spur R&D in specific areas where it could be highly beneficial to broad areas of society beyond long-distance jet travel.

:D

Unfortunately, with the GOP firmly entrenched in the House and now in control of the Senate, we won't see much done on climate change.

A lot of what needs to be done can be accomplished without the excited support of congress, at least in the near term. If the Republicans try to throw up major congressional road-blocks it will get everyone's position on the public record where they can be held accountable for those votes.

I'm interested in what the Tea Party influence will be as there is a wing that is all for cheaper and environmentally friendly power....they joined with the Greens in Georgia.

That might give the moderates who accept AGW some traction in dealing with the likes of Inofe.
Conservatives SHOULD be environment friendly and up until the last decade were.
In Canada Mulroney did a lot.....the oil and coal baron campaign put an end to all that.

In case that was a little too unclear, this is primarily aimed at moderate Republicans (if any remain) and the "blue-dog" Dems (mostly left over from the 2006 House/Senate sweep) who still have largely red districts.

I did notice something peculiar during the SOTU last night, the reactions from the watchers who were labeled as "independents" (who are typically regarded as "moderates") were the group of graders who seemed to consistently disagree more (still over 50% "agree") with most elements of the president's address more than either the Democrats or even those listed as Republicans.

Don't rule out the crunchy cons.

oh my ..small mercies....

The Senate on Wednesday voted 98-1 in favor of a an amendment stating that "climate change is real and is not a hoax."

The provision offered by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) to put Republicans on record about climate change ahead of the 2016 election passed with near unanimous support, with only Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), the chairman of the campaign committee for Senate Republicans, voting "no."

In a surprise, one of the Senate's staunchest climate change skeptics, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), voted in favor of the amendment. But he made clear he doesn't believe humans are the primary driver of climate change.

Ours are worse than humourless; they use irony.

I had to look up MANPAD on Wiki, which means my name's on a list now. Ain't that ironic.

I have a slight extenuating circumstance TGIFM (Thank God I'm Former Military) of course, all that means is that they can recall me at will, reinstate my commission and send me before a military tribunal. You don't even get to sing good prison songs about time at Leavenworth.

Inhofe is an embarrassment to my state actually. An embarrassment to the Republican party as well. Remember, here is the state putting unaccompanied illegal alien children in the military base Ft Sill. So AGW is pretty low on the totem pole of embarrassing issues and policies coming from Oklahoma. The government is hell bent for leather to repeat the dust bowl here again. That's the truth. Fortunately there are enough people from Oklahoma that remember the history and are working hard against those who would turn this beautiful state into a desert again. Problem is that the Inhofe types are well funded by the gas and oil lobby, the crunchy cons of the state, not so much. So that's why you get idiot politicians representing us. It is so bad it almost seems as if they are trying their best to turn the State to a blue state.
