Merged Global Warming Discussion II: Heated Conversation

It appears that the current Sunspot Cycle is shaping up to be a relatively weak and long Cycle. If historical precedent is an indicator, this means that the recent Global Warming we've experienced is about to undergo a very significant reversal.
Historical precedent is indeed an indicator, and suggests quite the opposite.

Do keep us informed on how Archibald's predictions pan out. We're already well into this 11-year cycle and no cooling so far despite low activity, but there's still hope to cling to if you feel you must.

what historical precedence is that??

Evidence of recent causal decoupling between solar radiation and global temperature – Pasini et al. (2012) “The Sun has surely been a major external forcing to the climate system throughout the Holocene. Nevertheless, opposite trends in solar radiation and temperatures have been empirically identified in the last few decades. Here, by means of an inferential method—the Granger causality analysis—we analyze this situation and, for the first time, show that an evident causal decoupling between total solar irradiance and global temperature has appeared since the 1960s.” Antonello Pasini et al 2012 Environ. Res. Lett. 7 034020 doi:10.1088/1748-9326/7/3/034020. [Full text]

Solar Influence on Global and Regional Climates – Lockwood (2012) “The literature relevant to how solar variability influences climate is vast—but much has been based on inadequate statistics and non-robust procedures. The common pitfalls are outlined in this review. The best estimates of the solar influence on the global mean air surface temperature show relatively small effects, compared with the response to anthropogenic changes (and broadly in line with their respective radiative forcings).
However, the situation is more interesting when one looks at regional and season variations around the global means. In particular, recent research indicates that winters in Eurasia may have some dependence on the Sun, with more cold winters occurring when the solar activity is low. Advances in modelling “top-down” mechanisms, whereby stratospheric changes influence the underlying troposphere, offer promising explanations of the observed phenomena.

In contrast, the suggested modulation of low-altitude clouds by galactic cosmic rays provides an increasingly inadequate explanation of observations.” Mike Lockwood, Surveys in Geophysics, July 2012, Volume 33, Issue 3-4, pp 503-534. [Full text]

should be very interesting when an El Nino spins up.

Hey...I look at the record low Polar Temperatures and record Polar Ice as facts.
You could point us to these record low Antarctic (I assume you mean) temperatures. Much of the extra ice is down to a massive iceberg sideswiping a glacier in 2010 resulting in a lot of floating debris.

What I suspect you're referring to is the result of a search for the coldest spot on Earth, which turns out (not surprisingly) to be in East Antarctica and weighs in at -92 to -94C. (Mars gets warmer than that.) This is not part of a temperature series.

Meanwhile Australia, not very far away, has had its warmest year on record. What do you make of that?

should be very interesting when an El Nino spins up.
2013 was only ENSO neutral and was a warm year; 2014 starts off neutral and looks likely to stay that way for six months or so. The denial case for hiatus depends now on La Ninas, and even there 2011 was the warmest La Nina year on record. Whatever happens the signal comes through.

The denier reaction to the next El Nino will something to watch.

Yes. Record high temperatures outnumber record lows, another sign of global warming.

actually in 2013 they were about balanced globally - have to look up the citation but that is to be expected in times where there is a strong increase in extreme weather events and an Arctic dipole.

Night time record temps are really where to look.

Of course readers could watch videos made by actual climate scientists...
Who only present a view that suits the belief that humans are to blame for climate change and weather extremes. Other facts that show this is not the whole case and that CO2 plays a minor part are ignored, hardly Science.

The bigger picture is presented in these two videos with links to the sources below them, just click "show more" .

The earth is only part of it with a recent 10% reduction in our protective magnetic field, a shrinking atmosphere and the magnetic pole movement lately accelerating "to 40 km per year," A recent paper shows that clouds blown by the solar wind affect our weather, an electromagnetic event.

The entire solar system appears to be changing simultaneously. Climate change and weather extremes are not our fault, we can't stop it only adapt as best we can.

Yes. Record high temperatures outnumber record lows, another sign of global warming.
The problem with claims like that, based on past experience, is that if that changes, say now there are more cold records, more records for low maximum temps, more record lows, somebody will quietly switch the claim, and say something different about what the records mean. In short, it won't matter. There is no metric, no possible scenario, no scientific set of predictions that can be said to have been met or not met, to know if the theory of global warming is true or not.

Like the Antarctic ice, or temperatures, or snowfall. It doesn't matter what happens, what the long term trend there is, it can't mean no warming. And when you point this out, that we are seeing something that isn't scientific at all, the very people who claim they are the science, the side of right, they hurl insults, they are insulting and rude and to top it off, they blame "other people" for making them act that way. Scientists don't talk like that.

Yes that is a factor. It could potentially even happen if all else were equal. But all else isn't equal. We have this pesky CO2 blanket mucking up the past trends and cycles.
Nobody knows, that is the actuality. Nobody knows because it hasn't happened before. In a normal world, where this was purely a scientific event, we would all agree nobody knows. And we would all be quite interested in what is going to be the effect of a quiet sun. (and we would honestly discuss how very wrong the predictions were about this current sunspot cycle)

But instead we get claims that are just not scientific at all. You don't know what is going to happen. Period. No if ands or buts, you don't know. That is the honest truth.
It appears that the current Sunspot Cycle is shaping up to be a relatively weak and long Cycle. If historical precedent is an indicator, this means that the recent Global Warming we've experienced is about to undergo a very significant reversal.

On Youtube, there is a series of Videos where Scientist David Archibald explains why long Sunspot Cycles are indicators of imminent Global Cooling. These are good videos that give a pretty-clear explanation of the facts.
Yes, going by historic records and current theory, we should see changes in climate from the changes in the sun. This ridiculous mania over "catastrophic global warming is happening now" wants to deny that this is even a possibility.

Who only present a view that suits the belief that humans are to blame for climate change and weather extremes. Other facts that show this is not the whole case and that CO2 plays a minor part are ignored, hardly Science.
Because weather is always "unusual" at times, people have been blaming other people for the weather for some time now.

ummmm - hardly ground shaking Haig...weak observed correlation, no mechanism

Here we present a result of an empirical study showing that there is a weak but statistically significant relation between low cloud cover at middle–high latitudes in both Earth’shemispheres and the interplanetary electric field, that favors a particular mechanism of indirect solar activity influence on climate: global electric circuit affecting cloud formation. We show that all characteristics of the relationship are in line with what is expected if the interplanetary electric field affects cloud cover via the global electric circuit:

(1) the low cloud cover shows a systematic correlation, at interannual time scale, with positive interplanetary electric field, at mid- and high-latitude regions in both hemispheres;

(2) there is no correlation between low cloud cover and interplanetary electric field in tropical regions;

(3) there is no correlation between low cloud cover and negative interplanetary electric field over the entire globe.

As an additional factor, cosmic ray flux may also affect
cloud cover in the presence of positive interplanetary electric field.

No clear effect of cosmic ray flux during periods of negative IEF was found.
Similar, but less statistically significant results were found also for middle and high cloud cover, suggesting that
Figure 8. Similar as figure 7 for high cloud cover.
7
Environ. Res. Lett. 8 (2013) 045032

the primary effect is on low-clouds. The fact that the found statistical relation exists only for the periods of positive IEF and not for negative IEF

talk about stretching ...

So to accept this you would have to

a) get a mechanism
b) show a much stronger correlation
c) and most important, show why C02 which along with water vapor as a magnifier does NOT represent the primary driver currently as that physics has been clear for a long time

By all mean it may be a small contributor but even that is in doubt as as the correlation is weak in the first play and unlike C02 where you have stratspheric cooling to confirm tropospheric warming....there is no negative correlation...

That skimpy bit of observation does not in any way cast doubt on existing AGW observation and theory and just puts you in the "scraping the bottom of the barrel" crowd.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yy3YJBOw_o

Do you agree with his comments on C02 that he outlines?

1) The climate change is real, and there is more to it than CO2 and 'global warming' - it is all extremes.
2) The entire solar system appears to be changing simultaneously.
3) The magnetic changes on earth began hundreds of years ago, and need to be tracked more effectively.
4) Weather modification appears to be implemented, and IMHO it is a zero-sum game.

Fact vs Opinion: The 'Weather Modification' segment contains many statements of my personal opinion on the negative aspects of the various applications. I have nothing but my humble opinion on those matters; humans survived this event before, and we can do it again now.

indeed he has nothing .....no science....more Mayan nonsense.
Unfortunately it falls square into woo....the first one of course is hilarious.

You do know he is claiming there is a hidden agenda about active weather modification. ( end of the second )
it even has the woo music to complete the picture.

Pseudoscience woo at best, but mostly cherry-picked instances with a lot of distortion and no congruency within the body of scientific understandings and evidences.

Reality indeed

It's becoming more obvious that our variable star is the main driver in climate change: weather: volcanic activity and can even be used to predict these events successfully ...

A great many of these links do not work, those that do, either do not support the assertions which they are presented to support or link to sites that seem to be pushing various unscientific conspiracies and pseudoscience beliefs.

Please vet this list and provide an updated listing which contains functional links to material that compellingly supports your assertions and beliefs.
