On Sunday, the audience gave him a standing ovation as he spoke of the nation's biggest threat: the growth of secular thought and an indifference to standing against militant Islam.

He warned that America is headed toward becoming a godless society unless voters take a stand against President Barack Obama and liberal-minded college professors and likeminded media pushing his agenda.

“There's a desperation with which our elites are trying to create amnesia so that we literally have generations who have no idea what it means to be an American,” he said.

(ETA: Not arguing with the mod edit, but before I posted that word I actually did a search for it to confirm that it was in fact allowed in other posts, so...)

Seems like a bit of a contradiction there.

He is a Muslim (but a closeted atheist).

ETA: Hmm your quick edit means this post makes no sense! Or maybe I'm seeing things. :D Please ignore, in any case.

Holy warriors like Newt and the C Street scum are a threat to the security of America.

General rule of thumb: when the press claims that someone says something outrageous, but the outrageous statements are not actually present in whatever they quote, there's a strong possibility that their statements are being mischaracterized.

I wonder if there's a transcript of the actual speech somewhere.

That's a good point. Not the case here, I think.

Here is an article with more quotes from the speech, including:

"I have two grandchildren — Maggie is 11, Robert is 9," Gingrich said at Cornerstone Church here. "I am convinced that if we do not decisively win the struggle over the nature of America, by the time they're my age they will be in a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists and with no understanding of what it once meant to be an American."

Did no one in the audience question such nonsense?

One of these things is not like the others,

One of these things just doesn't belong,

Can you tell which thing is not like the others

By the time I finish my song?

Yes, a baffling contradiction:

"I am convinced that if we do not decisively win the struggle over the nature of America, by the time they're my age they will be in a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists and with no understanding of what it once meant to be an American."

Are radical Islamists secular atheists?

Are radical Islamists secular atheists?

We're aware that this is a contradiction, and it obviously is, but he's essentially appealing to the strawman that atheists don't actually lack belief in god, but rather that they're angry at the One True God. With that in mind he seems to be implying, in a way that the Christian-fundamentalist audience would get, that atheists are in league with fundamentalist Islam to overthrow Christian-America. The "secular atheists" are in reality little more than cat's paws to Muslims, hence "dominated by radical Islamists". And, let's be frank, "radical Islamists" essentially means "Muslims in general" as the Tea Party/Christian-right have made it abundantly clear they view the difference between radical Islamists and moderate Muslims as they do the difference between horses and unicorns.

So, his implication is far more nefarious than "old-Christian conservative doesn't get atheism".

The scary thing is Gingrich isn't stupid--he is obviously aware that his statements make no sense. But he is being disingenuous and pandering to the lowest common denominator in his party. He doesn't give a damn that he is fueling hatred and bigotry at the same time.

I love how Republicans consistently feel the need to pander to their bigoted, ignorant base.

And he wants to be our president!

The GOP lineup currently seems to the extended members of the Addams Family. It's all quite surreal.

I mean, I used to believe people when they said Glenn Beck was the on the fringe of the party. Now I'm having a hard time believing that. The comments coming out of the mouths of Bachmann, Palin, Huckabee and Gingrich are just extraordinary.

It seems only Romney is the candidate who seems to be the relatively sane member of the family. And he's someone who believes native Americans are the descendants of naughty Israelites!
