Macquarie have published a response to the kerfuffle over the word "misogyny":

In response to the various emails, posts, tweets, etc., from the public, the editors would like to make the following comments:

• The original meaning of misogyny has NOT been replaced with the new definition. The original sense is still in use, so needs to be recorded in the dictionary. The entry for misogyny now has two definitions.

• ... There is a vast amount of evidence for the sense now covered in the Macquarie’s second definition. A check of other dictionaries revealed that the ideas of prejudice and superiority (not just pure hatred) were included by several, including the current complete Oxford dictionary online which was updated in 2002 to the hatred or dislike of, or prejudice against women.

• It does not matter to the dictionary editors who said the word or about whom it was used. What matters is that we realised that there was a sense of this word that was in common use, and had been for a good number of years, and it was not covered in the dictionary.

An article by Macquarie editor Sue Butler on The Punch is the second most commented-on article after one on abortion! Didn't have the patience to read all the comments but saw one who said he was going to replace his dictionary with an Oxford. That'll learn 'em!

I was under the impression that cutting and pasting other people's responses was against the T&Cs yet you've done it over and over again in this (with the exception of all "me me me" posts you've splattered) interesting thread.

I watched Gillard's tirade against Abbott last week. It had been sent to my wife by a colleague after she'd just been treated rather poorly after complaining to the purveyors of a nude calendar at work that the desk of a FTSE 100 financial firm was not the best place to ask "which ones would you do for breakfast, lunch and dinner?"

It made her feel much better, thanks, Julia.

You are right of course. Quoting slabs of news reports with little or no commentary fits the definition of spamming. As well as bring lazy.

Um... no. It doesn't.
If you believe otherwise you could always provide some evidence. Or (as per usual) report it - which I am certain you have anyway. The lack of moderation around same would contradict your claim.

Wait, you mean they changed the meaning of "dictionary" to cover changing the meaning of "misogyny".

But seriously, I'm astonished that so many people seem to be upset about a fairly routine process. Still, I suppose it serves as a distraction from actually addressing the issue.
