German banker sacked for comments about Jews

Must be one of those "holding Jews to a higher standard" thingies. It's Okay to make up stupid lies about them -- keeps them on their toes, making sure they don't backtrack into some immoral behavior. It's actually caring for them.

western-style liberal democracies should be held to a higher standard, than secular dictatorships and religious monarchies.

if not, than we should not give the special privelages, like security guaruntees and massive amounts of annual aid.

Now that´s just dishonest.

This guy was fired because his remarks about the unemployed and about Muslims - typical right-wing bigotry, I might add. He would have been fired just the same without that one remark about Jews.

I speculated that the reason he seems to not have been fired for worse remarks about Muslims than about Jews it isn't that the remark about Jews were so bad, but his previous remarks which were the real reason, but that the remark about Jews was the "last straw".

To say that something is the last straw is to say the remark in itself might not be too bad but that when added to a lot of previous, worse, stuff, it is too much.

So we agree 100% that his remark about Jews is far more benign than his remarks about others. We perhaps disagree on whether he would have been fired regardless, or whether the remark about Jews was the "last straw". If you say he would have been fired regardless I have no objections, you know the facts better here.

To my knowledge, he´s said exactly two things about Jews. The first that they have "a common gene", which I gather is actually sorta kinda correct in a very general sense. The second is that he´d prefer Eastern European Jews as immigrants over Muslims, because Eastern European Jews are even smarter than Germans. I couldn´t say if that "smarter" bit is actually correct, but this is even less of an insult than the "common gene" thing.

So, compared to his remarks about Muslims and the poor and the unemployed, what offense may be inherent in either comment on the Jews, it doesn´t even register on the radar of anyone not obsessed with perceived anti-semitism everywhere. Claiming they were the last straw for him being fired is like saying Hitler´s temper tantrums were the last straw that caused the Allies to insist on Germany´s unconditional surrender.

Um, take a look at the title of this thread sometime. It's hardly surprising that some people (and not just Skeptic) took the headline at face value. The article itself gives a clearer picture.

Just because the OP said "German banker sacked for comments about Jews". Which he actually made, although it is not clear (as I myself speculated) that they were the actual cause for his sacking. To think this has something to do with Jews? What gave me that idea?

Of course, I might have been far less tempted to do so if it weren't for the usual idiots trying, in a very weird way, to use this thread to discuss a metaphor used by an Israeli politician and making it into "evidence" he thinks there is a magical "Jewish gene" that one gains with conversion. When some people make everything into a "Israel is evil" thread, it's fair I think to point out they're speaking nonsense.

The whole thing started with the source - far be it from me to speculate why an Israeli newspaper would play up the "German politician making comments on Jews" angle - misrepresenting a very minor point, two comments in fact, in a long rant about the poor and Muslim immigrants.

Sarrazin has been playing to well-known right-wing bigotry agains foreigners and the unemployed. That you refuse to challenge this, and concentrate on the "oh dear, somebody apparently doesn´t love the Jews" stuff, tells me a lot about your intentions in participating in this thread.
