There were, allegedly, at least four parties. At least one of which was in the PM's residence. But the investigation is limited only to the one that no-one claims BoJo attended. And the investigation is being made by a man that it has been claimed attended that party. We're in serious Banana Republic territory.

Sadly it's SOP for this government when it's forced (by the media) to announce an investigation into something that it's done or not done - make the remit of the enquiry so narrow that, even if it is conducted competently, nothing of any import will be found and/or the findings can be dismissed because of the one-off nature of the problem (other examples having been specifically excluded).

The Conservative Party has been fined £17,800 for "failing to accurately report a donation" that paid for the refurbishment of the PM's flat.
The Electoral Commission also said the party failed to "keep a proper accounting record" around the donation.

Over £52,000 was given to the party by Lord Brownlow for the work, initially paid for by the Cabinet Office.
A Tory spokesman said the party was considering whether to appeal and would make a decision within 28 days.

....Opposition parties have condemned Conservative proposals to abolish or significantly revamp the Electoral Commission, with Labour saying any move to restrict the elections watchdog risks undermining faith in democracy....

That's about 20 rolls of wallpaper then.

I've never been in this thread before, but I happened to have on BBC World News, and also saw a rather lengthy segment on CNN -- something about a Christmas party? I'm rather jealous that that seems to be the most scandalous thing that's gone on in your politics for a while.

Maybe we can lend you some of ours. (from the US) :P

Not even close: this one is merely yet another cherry on top of a large cake already loaded with icing and cherries.

Just in case you were not being ironic...

How does Boris square this?

In May he told Lord Geidt that he did not know who was behind No11 flat refurb until Feb 2021.

Today the Electoral Commission says Boris Whatsapped Lord Brownlow in November 2020 asking for more cash for the refurbishment.

He said at a PMQs that he had no idea until Feb 21 and at that time he repaid the donation back in full.

Apparently Boris wants to bring the Xmas recess forward to next Tuesday.

He gets out of another PMQs this side of Christmas

Why does a millionaire need to beg for cash to redecorate? I paid for my new shed, how come Johnson can't pay for his own wallpaper?

As someone commented,

"Obviously Lord Geidt has to now resign for being lied to.
That’s how this works isn’t it?"

Doesn't know much, does he?

Considering he didn't know who'd coughed up for the gold wallpaper and the like at Downing Street and he didn't seem to know who had covered holiday expenses a couple of times, not to mention that he doesn't seem to know how many bairns he has, nor what chickens actually eat...Nor what mask-wearing rules apply in hospitals...

It's nearly as long a list what BlowJob doesn't know as what Raaaaaaaaaab doesn't know.

I wish to apologise fully and unreservedly for the highlighted error, as it turns out that BlowJob knew exactly who coughed up for the wall paper - https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-flat-downing-street-law-b1972824.html - but he lied to everyone abut it.

Refresh my memory, please: did he claim in the Commons that he didn't know where the money had come from? If so, when can we expect action against him for lying to the House?

Yes, I already posted this morning

According to the Spectator, Lockdown law never applied to No10 so the party was legal.

Section 73 of the Public Health (Control of Disease) states that the Covid regulations, at all times, never apply to Crown Land, which includes No. 10 and other government departments.

https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/did-the-downing-street-party-break-the-law

However, Schedule 22 of the Coronavirus Act (2020) "Powers to issue directions relating to events, gatherings and premises" is clear that :

"This Schedule applies in relation to Crown premises as it applies in relation to any other premises."

which takes precedence?

I honestly think that this will blow over - just like everything else. Just think of all the things that Boris Johnson has simply breezed through which would have finished off anyone else in the past:

  • Disclosures that he was awarding contracts to someone he was sleeping with when he was Mayor of London
  • Proroguing parliament
  • Having a Brexit deal, not having it and then breaking it - at least twice
  • Having tens of thousands of avoidable Covid deaths
  • Blowing £38bn on test and trace
  • Awarding £billions in contracts to mates
  • Risking the Northern Ireland agreement
  • Fuel shortages
  • Food shortages
  • Yet more sleaze
  • Trying to change the law to allow sleaze - and then having to u-turn
  • Abandoning our Afghan allies

I'm sure there are dozens more and all of that on top of being an embarrassing buffoon on both the national and international stage.

Brits don't mind any of those. Those one can live with. But having a party when the rest of us have to lockdown?

:nope:

Never underestimate Great British Envy.

She resigned as she felt her comments made light of the restrictions others were subjected to. She didn't mention the party

I've met many of her braying type. Thinks the plebs are funny in a snotty way.

Shouldn't worry about her. I am sure the Borister will soon form a square around her and hand her another £124K job for doing nothing soon.

Just heard some berk of a Tory from somewhere or other southern saying he was considering leaving the party over the re-imposition of some, limited, Covid restrictions, while not saying a thing about all the lies, the corruption, the incompetence, the lies and the corruption...Not to forget the incompetence...

Revealing about the general ethical standards in the Tories, eh?
