At band practice last night, we were totally unsurprised to find that our bassist and his wife have also signed up to host Ukrainian refugees. Like us they're "New Labour" types who have done very well professionally and look for ways to pay it back/forward. His wife has always worked in the children's charity sector and has good contacts among the refugee charities.

A number of friends and acquaintances in a 5 km radius have also signed up and a number of them have relevant experience in volunteering, fostering and safeguarding. A Zoom call has been set up for Thursday morning so that we can coordinate efforts and see what can be done to create a local support network for any refugees we do end up hosting.

The thought of opening up our home to complete strangers for a year or more is a little disconcerting given how settled our lives have become. Some controlled chaos like this is rather exciting and I hope that we're chosen as hosts. Apart from its comparative remoteness (the nearest village is 1.5km away, the nearest town 6km away, the nearest city 35km away) and poor internet connection (~7-8 Mbps), Don Towers is pretty ideal place with plenty of room. We can offer one ensuite room and two more double bedrooms with a shared, family, bathroom and over 100 square metres of lounge/kitchen/dining space. We could also convert the gym into a study/play space if needed and although our garden is tiny by local standards, it's still well over 500 square metres.

It would be a challenge to share your home but I think the best way is to give them complete privacy and just let them have their space. From what I gather, you are not expected to provide food, although of course, that is up to you. In a way it is an exciting challenge. However, it is only natural to feel some trepidation.

These children here already starting school in Italy is very moving:

This is what makes Italy great.
After years of Salvini’s pro-Putin, xenophobic rhetoric on refugees…
Today, Italian teachers & students welcomed Ukrainian refugees for their first day of school…

I'm not crying. You are.

We're very comfortably off and so long as the people we are hosting don't feel bad about it, we'd be perfectly happy to contribute towards their costs whether it's basic food and drink, helping them to get back on their feet w.r.t. clothing, personal effects and so on, or giving them some discretionary spending for some little luxuries (or to send home).

I think it will be challenging to strike the right balance between being supportive and being condescending. Maybe the right thing to do would be just to buy them a cheap run-around vehicle and cover the costs of keeping it on the road so they're less isolated. I'm sure this is the kind of thing that charities are very experienced in dealing with and will be able to provide good advice.

Some wonderful news for Nazanin and her family and friends: she is now at Tehran airport and on her way home! No thanks to Boris Johnson, even if he did cough up that £400m pricking at his conscience, for having dropped her right in it in the first place.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the British-Iranian woman detained in Iran nearly six years ago, is on her way to the UK, her MP has said.

Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was at the airport in Tehran, Tulip Siddiq said in a tweet.

She is returning with fellow British-Iranian detainee Anoosheh Ashoori, Reuters news agency reported.

Meanwhile, covid cases in the UK are rising steeply. Up by 48k to 110k compared to this day last week.

But has it actually done anything to make Abramovich less rich ?

AIUI, he'll get to sell Chelsea.

But all that matters is that it got massive press coverage and made it look as if the government were actually doing something.

Well lucky for the government that to mention this would be to politicise the war in Ukraine or something.

Mrs Don and I got pinged on the NHS app yesterday and are now testing daily - negative so far.

Or over 250k according to the ZOE extrapolations, when the previous peak was around 200k. Anecdotally there seems to be a lot around, too; several people on Facebook I know have tested positive recently, and several gigs have been cancelled due to band members having it too.

And the award for most shameless tweet of the year goes to…..

@BorisJohnson
United Kingdom government official
I am very pleased to confirm that the unfair detention of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori in Iran has ended today, and they will now return to the UK.

If the government is now describing the 400 million quid owed to Tehran as a legitimate debt why could they not have done so five years ago?

Because Johnson didn't need the distraction then?

He is claiming that it could not be paid before now because of 'sanctions'. By pure coincidence, Johnson has visited the Saudis to secure an oil deal, which I am sure had nothing to do with wanting to keep their Iran pals happy.

How does Johnson do it? Three more brutal executions on the same day as his visit.

Saudi Arabia executed three men on Wednesday as Boris Johnson arrived for talks on increasing the supply of oil.

The prime minister is visiting the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia today as he urges oil-rich countries to boost production so the West can “wean itself off” Russian energy.

Hasn't quite got the hang of ethics and good governance.

While Boris is undoubtedly a twat there are, as far as I can see, no quick, easy energy solutions to replace Russian gas/oil that doesn't involve other questionable regimes.

Boris bowed the knee and left empty-handed.
He says he 'protested about' human rights.
Three more people were executed while he was there.

Pals? Deadly enemies, surely.

The British line was that the £400M couldn't be repaid because it was owed to the Iranian Ministry of Defence and thus sanctions applied. They've made the repayment now, giving it a legal figleaf that it's ring fenced for humanitarian use.

Reuters says a similar US repayment has also gone through, that it's part of moves to get the US-Iran nuclear deal reinstated and hints Russia's adventuring has something to do with the timing, but I didn't grasp what that was.
