I work in construction and can dowse gas lines, power lines, and telecommunication lines with 100% accuracy 100% of the time. Anyone can. I don't do the work, the rods do. It takes no special talent what so ever. Sounds like some real easy money to be made here to me...

What double blinded testing have you done to eliminate the ideomotor effect?

flabio,

First, go for it.

Second, welcome to the discussion.

Third, what Pixel42 said.

Fourth, can you tell the difference between gas lines, power lines and telecommunication lines? If so, how?

Good Luck,
Ward

And you are not allowed to use any electronic gadgets which work quite well... just your two bent metal rods (or wooden fork) that do not use any battery, mains or otherwise supplied electric power.

Remember, the claim has to be something that can not be explained by current science :)

This can be done by someone who knows what they are doing. No super natural powers required at all. Such lines would be laid down in logical ways. Of course put some down in random places and these people would have results no better than guesswork.

Exactly. I've told the story here elsewhere, not sure where it is now, of the dowser who confidently "found" the buried electric line in the old grown-over wheel rut in our yard, but couldn't find the real line where it had been carefully landscaped over so there was no trace of the original trench.

It amazes me how dowsers are clueless about the perfectly ordinary hints and knowledge they're using, until they fail spectacularly in controlled double-blind testing--and then most of them still deny it.

Heh! Even guesswork won't work. We are live in an old-ish house (200+ years) and when the waterpipes burst 3 different plumbers with high-tech gadgetry could not find the pipes.

We ended up redoing them in a sensible way :)

We invite you to apply. It'll be the easiest million bucks you ever make.

Above ground, or below?

Would a specially prepared sheet of paper be allowed? It requires no power source whatsoever.

And yet the $50,000 from the IIG remains unclaimed.

I call troll. Check his posting history. Then look again at the wording of this post. Bravo Sierra resin.

Of course, as long as it is not a map of sorts...

This I will openly admit...

I had been lurking here for some time and just could no longer sit back and witness Rob Menard get maliciously dog piled by all of his detractors on JREF.

You'll have to excuse me if I later became interested in other things that are happening here on the RANDI board. It's just when I checked the new posts and dowsing was the topic I couldn't resist the urge to interject. In all reality I myself have dowsed hundreds of lines in my life. I cannot differentiate between gas, power, or telecommunication lines. The rods just cross when you pass over a line of pretty much any sort. Like I mentioned before, dowsing involves no talent what so ever, and in my years of construction I have witnessed dozens others dowse or as they say in the industry, witch.

And yes, It would be my pleasure to demonstrate to JREF exactly just how simple dowsing actually is. And honestly, I'd kind of feel bad about taking the money.

So, in short... Is this the point where I should fill out the application to take the challenge? If so, I'm totally up for it.

Given this, why do you suppose no one has won the challenge so far?

This is the point where you read the FAQ from the link a few posts ago to see if you qualify. Most people do not have a media presence or academic affidavits. But don't let that stop you. There are a number of other organizations which offer cash prizes for proof of dowsing or other paranormal phenomena. The money's not as big as the JREF's, but passing any one of those other tests would still earn you a hefty cheque and it would also attract all the media and academic attention you'd need to qualify for the million.

Here is a list of such cash challenges:

There's the Australian Skeptics' AU$100,000 Prize
http://www.skeptics.com.au/features/prize/
They also offer AU$20,000 as a "Spotter's Fee"

There's the IIG's US$50,000 Challenge in California, USA
They now have affiliates in Atlanta, GA and Washington, DC and are developing affiliates in Denver, CO, Calgary, Canada and probably other places as well.

They also offer US$5,000 as a "Finder's Fee"

There's the North Texas Skeptic's US$12,000 Challenge in the USA

There's Prabir Ghosh's 2,000,000 Rupee Challenge in India
http://rationalistprabir.bravehost.com/

There's the Swedish 100,000SeK prize offered by Humanisterna
http://www.humanisterna.se/index.php...d=27&Itemid=49

Thanks, but I'm guessing most of the aforementioned challenges require that one locates an underground water source, and I've never even attempted that. All the dowsing I've preformed has been for work, not hobby. It may be fun to give it try though.
