First Lady Booed, or NASCAR Fans are morons

she's not there as a political person.
Yes, she is. Now it may not be directly party political, but it is still a political statement intended to raise the profile of the Obama brand by attaching it to a motherhood and apple pie issue. This has been standard for lest half a century.

What makes her deserving of disrespect?

(hey, look! we're debating! It is debatable!)

She is a political appointee (appointed in a very special way…) engaged in a certain type of political campaigning and as such should not automatically be immune from public criticism, of which booing is a very minor form.

Maybe NASCAR fans don't like US veterans.

It boggles my mind when I think of the level of hatred it takes for a NASCAR fan to boo the first lady given the circumstances of her appearance. Really. :boggled:

Then being political, by your definition, is completely meaningless. Since by merely existing as a mother and good person, she's raising the profile of the Obama brand. If she goes to feed homeless people, she should be booed, because she's there to raise the profile of the Obama brand. If she visits wounded vets, she should be booed, because she's there to raise the profile of the Obama brand. Carried to its absurd conclusion, the only way she could be immune from booing is to do something awful. Then, there's no confusion about raising the profile of the Obama brand, she's doing something mean and cruel, and therefore shouldn't be booed. Since she's not being political.

I don't know what happened there, hopefully it was only pockets of boos, but she deserves respect and the cause deserves respect.
.
Nascar fans are red necks.
Red necks hate Obie.
Boos (at the very least) will always come from that crowd.

BOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH

stick to watching cars go in circles :D
.
Ever watched a Figure-8 race?
If you think the Nascar bunch is low, they is floating on top of the fans of Figure-8!

What did everyone expect? The crowd was jam-packed with anti-Obama supporters and quite frankly, a few racists. I'm not at all surprised this happened. In fact, if I were the Obamas I would have expected this.

One should never lower one's expectations to the gutter.

There are lots of things that happened in this administration that most didn't expect. But then again most didn't expect a black president either. There is still a huge amount of culture shock from having a black president. I'm not thoroughly convinced some people have gotten over this fact.

Where I live usually the day of figure 8 racing is topped of with an evening demolition derby.

No, she's not immune to boos. But if she's appearing, say, at a benefit to help wounded veterans (or as here, acting on their behalf), she's not there as a political person. It'd be like booing Laura Bush when she went to read to kids. It's just wrong. Now if Laura was out stumping for her husband? Yeah, that's fine. But these two women were not stumping. They were helping vets. Again, just wrong.

I disagree because some of what they were doing was stumping. But in my opinion respect should have been given and actually was by the majority.

ETA I see Brodski beat me to it.

"Love is given. Respect must be earned." (dunno who)

Neither of the Obamas have earned any from me. But I'm not sure whether I care enough to boo.

That's insane. I don't know the lady standing in line in front of me at the grocery store. She certainly hasn't "earned" my respect just by standing there. Yet I wouldn't be rude to her just because she hasn't yet earned some sort of decency on my part. You don't owe her respect, but you owe everyone decency and politeness unless they've done something to you first, since that's what civilized people do if they have any sense of community whatsoever. Only sociopaths go through life expecting everyone they meet to "earn" their common courtesy before doling any out.

Point being, no one should boo any president even if George W. Bush hit the stage and you’re an ardent liberal and rich old guy hater (just making stuff up). It doesn't make it right to yell at George W. Bush at all. He's a president and deserves a certain caliber of respect. And I think that is what most people are getting at here.

With this being said, I've anticipated that something like this would happen. It doesn't shock me a bit.

Booing is an immature, childish way of expressing feelings. It's fascinating watching people justify boorish behavior. Fascinating, but not surprising.

Which is why I would looove to see Herman Cain get the Republican nomination.

MASS-TERIA!!!!
