Disclaimer: I am a NASCAR fan and a moderate conservative.

At this weekends season ending race to decide this years champion, Madam Obama and Dr Biden were honored guests (Grand Marshalls) and gave the traditional "Gentlemen, Start Your Engines". As they were introduced, there were noticable pockets of loud boo's from the crowd.

Now, I know that the current President may not be a favorite of the average NASCAR fan. The average fan in NASCAR is almost certainly from the other side of the isle. I know that in today's American political climate, voters choose sides and are as loyal to "their" party as sports fans are to "their" team. Had it been the "Uncle Joe" Obama and "Simple Joe" Biden, I'd say give them an earful.

This wasn't the Prez and his loyal but stupid sidekick. This was two prominent ladies that were at the race in order to raise awareness of and support for their Joining Forces initiative - an effort to raise awareness for the plight of military wounded. The sum of her incindiary comments during the full day she devoted to meeting with military familes:

“Everyone around the country is focused on you. And this isn’t just an effort today,” she said. “ Jill and I through Joining Forces, we want to make this a part of the dialogue in this country forever. Whether Jill or I are here or not, whether this administration is here or not, this is about the way we want this country to talk about our troops, veterans and military families forever. We want you to feel that appreciation and that gratitude so that you know your sacrifice is not in vain.”

NASCAR fans (and football fans, and baseball fans, and certainly Soccer fans) are morons. For the same reasons, fans of political parties are also morons. Being a moron in support of the Stealers or Yankees is fine. Being a moron in support of rank ideology (as Republicans on the debt reduction committee are currently doing) over the best interests of the country is not.

I don't know what happened there, hopefully it was only pockets of boos, but she deserves respect and the cause deserves respect.

It seemed to be a few loud morons, rather than a general display of boorish behavior by the whole crowd.

Whether she deserves respect in general or not is debatable. I was struck by the seeming incongruity of a bunch of NASCAR types (yes, they are a monolithic bunch of Dog God loving, 'Merica first, beer drinking, PATRIOTIC, mullet sporting pinheads) booing someone whose sole purpose for appearing was to promote a cause I'd have guesed the crowd would whole-heartedly support.

In other words, we now treat of politics almost exactly as we treat our spectator sports.

Support such blatant socialism? Why would you think that?

I feel the President and his wife (maybe someday her husband) deserve respect unless they have done something much worse than simply espousing political views different than those in any crowd.

Option 1: you jest, and no response is required, except to congratulate you on an appropriate level of sarcasm.

Option 2: you are serious (unlikely), and no response would penetrate your protection-from-reality defense shiled.

I agree, in general. I could understand if someone held the position that the wife of an elected representative would not automatically deserve any more respect than the average citizen. Therefore, I believe that whether or not she merits respect is debatable.

I could even understand it if someone believed that wounded servicemen did not merit respect, and therefore Ms Obama does not merit respect for attempting to help them. What makes the NASCAR fans morons is that Ms Obama was appearing as a show of support for a position that NASCAR fans almost universally support.

All sports are dumb. All sports are not equally dumb, however. Watching soccer* is dumber than watching auto racing, but not as dumb as watching baseball or golf.

*soccer and hockey are the same sport. They each exist as seperate activities only to occupy hooligans year-round.

yeah when one beliefs lousy cars going in circles is actually auto racing... well

but thats OT :D

Exactly, I may have been tempted to boo Dick Cheny, if I was in a crowd, but not the First Lay and Vice FL.

I do boo at my local congersman whenever I see him however...

My folks were huge NASCAR fans and Dick Trickle was a friend of theirs.

None of the people I knew that they socialized with would have had the lack of manners to boo even if they did not agree with the person, and would have even clapped politely.

Has so much changed in the decade since my mother died?

This makes me very sad.

I turned my back to the 4th of July parade when the Tea Party went by and wielded signs that denigrated our President. I had nothing wrong with the dissent itself, just a 4th of July parade is more family oriented and not really the appropriate platform.

I think it is pretty low class to boo a first lady that is doing charity work but it is yet another example of Michelle Obama Derangement Syndrome. Conservatives boo her when she supports exercise and better eating for our kids.

Or?

You could at least watch real auto racing before taking jabs at soccer and hockey.

I do watch real auto racing. If real auto racing isn't on, I'll also watch F1. Most of my "watching" time is really spent waiting for my division to start heat races.

Wasn't there a time when generally people respected the opposing party enough as an opposing view not to portray it as an enemy of society? Sometimes I wish Obama did enough radical things to actually deserve his reputation among his opposition.
