For the first time, a lesbian couple today marked a time-honored Navy homecoming tradition in which a sailor is chosen to be the first off the ship to exchange a kiss with a loved one, The Virginian-Pilot reports.

linky

:)

Maybe.

But I tend to think of these things from the marketing perspective: a viewpoint becoming part of the culture.

Apart from it being cute, these things chip away at the bigotry.

It really helps that:
1.They're female
2. They're hot

At this stage, that's better marketing than two hairy blokes playing tonsil tennis.

Check out the reactions below the article, still plenty of bigotry to go round.
But the culture is changing. And in a democracy, political leaders only start to promote things that are already part of the culture. It's the only way to win elections.

Eventually politics will side with gay rights, and I like that just fine. :)

Sorry for rambling post. I'm at work and in a hurry.
Hope I make sense.

But we'll really know gay rights has made it when two "hairy blokes" play tonsil hockey (more manly than tennis) and no one comments.

I know.

Try sending a press release saying you're black and riding in the front of the bus.

I expect you media exposure to be pretty minimal.

And not just any lesbians I must say, two gorgeous brunettes, so it was enjoyable for everyone.

Hey now, I'm all for all people having all the rights of all other people, but that includes my right to comment "Eww! Get a room!"

My first though on seeing the photo - purposely (and masterfully) staged. Two attractive ladies swapping spit is nice. Two dudes doing the same prompts my gag reflex, and I support extending the full protections of the Constitution to all Americans without regard (or exception) for sexual orientation. Imagine the reaction of gay rights opponents had it been two dudes.

It's not a matter of them being of the same sex, two unattractive straight people kissing isn't very interesting either.

Isn't that pic just a still from the opening credits of Watchmen?

You mean there's more?

Was this the only "first kiss" of gays from the military, or was this the Navy only? It seems a touch suspicious to me that the "first kiss" being covered is between two young, and reasonably attractive women. I am not trying to put down either their kiss or their relationship. But it does seem rather . . . not certain the term . . . photo-perfect.

From the link provided in the OP:

As homecoming approached, the crew and the ship's family readiness group sold $1 raffle tickets to pick the sailor to be first off the ship to deliver the coveted first kiss on the dock.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta bought 50 tickets and won, the newspaper reports.

Navy officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship's return, the Associated Press reports.

I'm not sure other military branches even have such "first kiss" opportunities.

Neither. It is a tradition in the Navy for one lucky sailor to get the "first kiss" upon returning home from a deployment. It's almost as joyful an occasion as "beer day".

I saw this when I read my paper this morning. My first reaction was nausea. (Not from the picture; thinking about all the Republicans fighting to be first in line denouncing it. Just what I wanted for Christmas: Perry, Bachmann, and Gingrich fighting over the chance to mock Americans in return for fundamentalist brownie points.)
