Patriot Front, an overtly fascist group that spun off Vanguard America after that name became too toxic after the murder of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville, held an unannounced march through the streets of Philadelphia over the 4th of July weekend.

Philly did not take kindly to this fascist intrusion

Patriot Front elements were first identified in Center City Saturday night via Twitter, where video surfaced of unidentified protesters marching towards City Hall in force. The group can be heard chanting “RECLAIM AMERICA” as they cross 15th Street towards the Philadelphia Municipal Building. More video taken at the base of City Hall several minutes later show the group facing resistance from bystanders who eventually pushed them back and out of Center City. Photos by the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jessica Griffin chronicle the group’s retreat as they are pushed back to their trucks at a parking lot near Penn’s Landing, igniting red colored gas grenades to cover their retreat. The group hurriedly piled into the back of the rental trucks and attempted to flee down Christopher Columbus Boulevard.

Good Samaritans quickly descended on the group and forced them back to several rented box trucks to make a hasty retreat, before being intercepted by philly PD and briefly detained.

Great photos of fascists getting an independence day beating here:

Sometimes the news media gives me the impression that the USA is a fully fascist country. It's nice to be reminded that at least half it's population isn't, and don't take kindly to wannabe Nazis. Well done, Philadelphia!

Are marches like this illegal?

It doesn't seem as though there were any charges.

It’s a fine and a violation of the contract with the rental company. Not exactly high crimes, but they may have some issues renting trucks for this stunt again.

Keep in mind the Patriot Front did a job hiding that they were doing this stunt, so all the counter protesters were just people who were along the March during a a hot evening on a holiday weekend.

I'm assuming it's not lawful to transport human beings in the back of box trucks.

I am asking about the legality of the march, not the transportation violation.

I don’t think they got a permit. But again, it’s probably just a fine once the smoke has cleared. A,Philly demonstration permit costs $20 but requires proof of $1 million of insurance. You also have to say who you are.

As far as I know, it's not illegal to out and get your ass kicked in Philly .

Ok, so you would say that if people are engaged in a (presumably) legal march, it is ok to run them off the street and/or assault them...just as long as you disagree with their ideology?

Interesting.

yes, I think violently disrupting fascist street rallies is an honorable and beneficial thing. Spare me your pearl clutching, this forum has already been through this song and dance before.

Fascists are always in the minority. It's pretty much built into their structure. "We are the special few who deserve to run everything by virtue of our specialness", doesn't really work and is unnecessary if you are actually in the majority.

Fascists try to gain power by attaching themselves to larger groups and organizations, and creating the illusion of popular support. Reward people who say the right things, punish people who step out of line. Create an assembly of true believers and people who don't believe but are willing to go along with it for personal gain or avoid bad treatment. Project the illusion of power.

These marchers tried a tactic I have seen a few times. Secretly organize a right wing flash mob, go to someplace and publicly make a giant fuss, then skulk away before anyone objects. It creates an illusion of power but probably takes up most of the manpower available. If you have a hundred supporters, you get all of them to march, then say "Here are a hundred supporters marching! Image how many we must have that didn't come today! And no one is complaining right now, so we must have many supporters here! Pack up the trucks!". Tragically, they did not get out in time to avoid a hostile reaction.

They would have needed permission to do the March ( which is usually given). The fact that the police didn't seem to be involved from the start suggests that they didn't apply for one.

That is exactly the sort of thinking that people embrace when they assault other groups that they don't like/agree with, such as BLM, LGBTQ, Muslims, Jews, etc..

I think in the case of provably violent groups whose purpose is to attack the rights of others, an argument can be made for an exception. Whether that argument would be convincing is another matter.

Unannounced visits into "the belly of the beast" is a common tactic meant to project power and an image of bravery like you describe. Parading around a city where they obviously aren't welcome makes them look tough, assuming they are in and out before there can be an adequate response. They kinda botched it this time because they got whupped on by random passerbys and were caught on camera running like the cowards they are.

A real botch job as far as propaganda is concerned, it's hard to imagine any of the fash are happy with how they look coming out of this one.

They shoulda picked a softer city, Philly doesn't play.
