margarine are better for us than real butter. It has all been a lie. The truth is "unsaturated fats" are actually the biggest cause of heart disease.

He also mentioned the VIOXX crime, where some 60,000 people had to die before a FDA employee blew the whistle on his corrupt employer. The FDA had all the data, knowing that VIOXX was killing people, yet they did nothing to stop it.

I mention these things because we are being lied to on a daily basis by our government and big corporations. You must look out for yourself. I am afraid this is just the tip of the criminal iceberg too.

Everything is a poison taken in sufficient quantity. Salt is a poison, but it's nothing compared to the iodine that is added to it. However, in small enough quanties, iodine is not merely not poisonous, but crucial to the prevention of diseases like goiter.

With some cancers - e.g. malignant melanoma - surgery can offer a pretty straightforward cure if you catch it soon enough. An operation - even a minor one - isn't nice, but beats the hell out of the alternative.

Fluoride is a natural compound found naturally in water supplies throughout the world. At a very low level, it has been showed to improve dental health by increasing enamel strength. At high dose, Fluoride like any other chemical in reality, it can harm just like large doses of water or salt. Aspartame has been studied extensively and has been found to be safe in small doses. One of its breakdown products is methanol and its ensuing byproduct, formic acid which is toxic in high doses. However, you ingest more methanol by eating fruit and licorice. It is relatively harmless unless one ingest massive doses of it. The lab studies do show that large doses can lead to various forms of cancers, however this link is related to chronic methanol toxicity and is not inherent to the aspartame itself.

Vioxx came to the attention of the FDA after several researchers at several independent hospitals noticed the increased risk of cardivascular diseases in patient taking the products. They started a major study to determine the cause, found that Vioxx was the definite cause and pulled the product. The issue is that the company hid this information. So you don't even have your facts about this real "conspiracy".

Regardless of the accuracy of your specific claims, you make one fundamental mistake. To paraphrase Henry David Thoreau, you are merely trying to pick at the leaves on the tree of tyranny - even if you succeed, new ones will grow there in due time. What we need to do is to strike at the root!

You vilify corporations, but corporations consist of regular human beings (i.e. employees, stockholders, customers) who choose to cooperate voluntarily for mutual benefit. No one forces you to do business with any corporation. If you own your land and wish to grow your own food and be entirely self-sufficient, that is your right.

The problems you describe all entirely rest on the government, which claims a "divine right" to initiate aggression (i.e. taxation, regulation, currency monopoly, etc, etc, etc). Only the government can monopolize water distribution, and deprive you of choice when it comes to the chemicals that are added to that water. And the FDA is a violent and unaccountable monopoly that replaces a decentralized mesh of competing quality assurance / certification agencies which would have otherwise emerged. In a free society all sorts poisons would technically be legal, but individual human beings would know that they are responsible for the safety of what they consume, and avoid the products that they don't trust. This would create massive competition among businesses to comply with the highest possible standards of transparency in order to earn their consumer's trust. Most mainstream stores would simply refuse to carry dangerous products to protect their reputation. Everybody would be keeping an eye out on everyone else, which makes all "bugs" shallow.

I agree. The issue with the FDA is how poorly funded it is. Many of the people who sit on the boards and perform the reviews have ties to pharma and some will work for pharma after they are done with their stint with the FDA. They need better funding to prevent this influence.

It is also heavily influenced by politics like the whole Plan B and RU-486 debacle with the Bush administration. Politics sometime trumps science.

The FDA has a mandate only to review safety and efficacy. If it is safe(weighed against risk v benefits) and it works to a degree, the drug will likely be approved. This requires actual work and research not blind claims and happy thoughts.
