You, and others, attribute far too much hipness to the reprobates who are using it. To the perps, White Power isn't a joke. It's a calling. These aren't uber hip net denizens. They probably think 4Chan is a new Chinese takeaway in the strip mall.

It doesn't matter where it started, whether 4Chan or 8Chan or they got it off a box of Weetabix. The fact that you think it's ironic does not mean the people using it do. The simple fact that they think it's funny, if that's the case, should also tell you something.

I'm trying to find the humor in having someone think I'm a racist, and I must be missing something, 'cuz it escapes me.

1. Trolls on 4 chan with possible white supremacist ties invent the symbol to trigger the libs.
2. White supremacists on 4 chan and elsewhere start to use the symbol.
3. Libs are triggered.
4. Stupid people say "It's just a joke bro".

The “OK” hoax was actually just one in a series of hoaxes in which 4channers (and members of other, similar places on the Internet such as 8chan and Reddit) have tried to take innocuous items, symbols or gestures and falsely attribute white supremacist meanings to them in order to fool liberals and get them to spread such false messages

It's not that it's a joke, it's that it was designed to be a haox to upset Libs, if you get upset you are doing exact what they wanted you to do and they win.

And not only do they win and make this gesture unacceptable, but next we can't dab, drink milk, use the rainbow flag, clap, have pictures of polar bears or chefs. Do you really want to go there?

None of this matters. It is a symbol used by white supremacists to signal their racism. Obviously not everyone who uses the OK sign feels that way, just like not everyone who uses the number 88 is a neo-nazi. But your position is the one that requires a heavy dose of willful ignorance.

They're telling us that they are racist, and we're listening and acting accordingly.

Of course, before long we won't be able to draw swastikas and seig heil any more.

No, it's a signal that is being used by many people in the right to try and make Liberals look stupid because they are getting upset about it, and as a result a few stupid people on the far, far, far right who either didn't get the full memo or just are dumb, think that it's a signal to show racism, have used it too.

Just because a few of them have used it thinking it means something, doesn't mean it actually does. Most people using it use it for a meaning other then WS, and most of those that use in the way suggested by the 4chan trolls, are doing so purely to try and make the left be upset by it, and thus show their stupidness over getting upset by something that isn't real.

The difference between this and swastikas and seig heil is that those were official symbols of a fascist regime. This isn't, it's a hoax being played on the Left, and you and others are swallowing it hook line and sinker, which is exactly what those that created the hoax want.

As I said before, read the page from the ADL. If you think that my position requires a heavy dose of willful ignorance, you better go and tell them that they are wrong too.

It's a signal being used by white supremacists in what was originally a "joke" that became serious. They are telling us they are racists. We are listening.

ETA: I don't think anyone's offended by the hand gesture. What's offensive is that we are expected not to react when someone is saying "I'm a proud racist".

Exactly it is like doing a good old seig heil. I call out that the person is a nazi but it does not exactly trigger PTSD in me. Personally for triggering people I think setting off fireworks at the VA is better. Laugh riot there.
 
The problem with all this is it allows anyone on the "Pretending to be a racist to troll people" to "actual racist" spectrum to ruin anything by making it "about" racism.

Sure now it's mostly meaningless symbolism and vague co-opted stuff like that, stuff that isn't particularly worth fighting to get back, but it isn't going to stay on that level forever.

Imagine something you love; an image, a gesture, a fictional character, a piece of clothing, whatever, as the the next thing these racist and/or trolling doucheturds choose to appropriate.

At a certain point we have to at least put the option of taking some of this stuff back on the table, instead of the "Well they touched it, it's ruined forever now" mentality.
