Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

I apologize. Are you a right-wing militia type by any chance?

Oh, sure, because only a right-wing militia type would point out that you misrepresented what was said for the purposes of making it look obviously false.

Come on. What you did was both dishonest and dumb. Own up to it, rather than trying to throw aspersions my way.

I knew what you meant.

I agree they may deserve jail time. What they did was very serious.

I do have sympathy for them, though. Did they know why Tsarnaev was asking them to get rid of the backpack? And what backpack exactly?

It's a dilemma. Your friend does something horrible. He asks for your help.

He's still your friend.

I honestly don't what I would do. I don't think I would help them. Would I report them? Not sure.

Really? You're not sure you wouldn't report a friend who just blew up a crowd of people??? Wow. You'd have blood on your hands when they blew up the next crowd.
And in terms of "He's still your friend" any friend of mine who murders innocents (children, even) has just destroyed the friendship.

Dias Kadyrbayev, 19, and Azamat Tazhayakov, 19, both of New Bedford were charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy to obstruct justice by conspiring to destroy, conceal and cover up tangible objects belonging to suspected Marathon bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, namely a laptop computer and backpack containing fireworks.

A third man, Robel Phillipos, 19, of Cambridge, was charged with willfully making materially false statements to federal law enforcement officials during a terrorism investigation.

According to the affidavit accompanying the complaint, Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov are both nationals of Kazakhstan who entered the United States on student visas.

Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov face a maximum sentence of five years in prison and $250,000 fine. Phillipos faces a maximum sentence of eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

If a friend of mine does deliberate murder,he just lost my friendship.

I'm sure the agonized victims of the marathon bombing admire your loyalty.

So, now we know that they found what they were looking for at the landfill. Those criminal affidavits are interesting reading. Sounds like his friends immediately decided to do everything they could to cover up for him. Makes you wonder what's going on in their heads. Could just be the folly of youth and not really comprehending the enormity of what they were doing. To me, that does not diminish their responsibility at all.

Also, they were extremely stupid to answer the questions of the FBI without contacting a lawyer first. Bad for them, good for the investigation.

Agreed.

I've thought throughout that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in no way fully comprehends the enormity of what he did. I think only in the years ahead will he begin to fully understand.

So it looks like Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov have been in custody since 20 April; not sure about the other guy.

The complaint doesn't make clear what happened to the laptop after it was taken from Tsarnaev's dorm room. Appears only the backpack containing fireworks was put in the dumpster and later recovered from the landfill?

Could well be what they were referring to when the stated they were not presenting all of the evidence.

Yes, they probably only need to mention the minimum amount of evidence that connects the backpack with Tsarnaev.

The FBI agent states in one of the affidavits that there is more evidence collected than he is presenting. That he is only presenting what they, the FBI and federal prosecutor, feel is adequate to establish probable cause sufficient to have an arrest warrant issued.

We don't know, I can remember getting very angry at hearing, shortly after the 11th of September 2001, a conversation to the effect that had AQ just asked, the local student guild (or was it Resistance: A Socialist Youth Group (tm)) would have 'run interference' had AQ done something similar in Perth (Australia). Then I realised that they probably had no idea what AQ was and put it aside.

It could be that, or more likely they just wanted to stop their friend getting railroaded or mistaken for the bomber.

Regarding the laptop, the article currently on YahooNews! implies that the laptop ended up at the dump along with the backpack.

Kadyrbayev decided to remove the backpack from the room in order to help his friend Tsarnaev avoid trouble," the charge sheet says, adding that he also removed a jar of Vaseline he thought might have been used "to make bombs."

"He decided to take Tsarnaev's laptop as well because he did not want Tsarnaev's roommate to think he was stealing or behaving suspiciously by just taking the backpack," it said.

Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov took the items back to their apartment, where they placed them in a black garbage bag and threw them into a nearby dumpster. Police later recovered the items from a landfill.

Most likely the laptop isn't particularly incriminating. It doesn't sound like Dzhokhar asked them to remove it or anything. They just took it to seem like they were getting a bunch of stuff for him or something so as not to arouse the roommate's suspicions.

I find it unlikely that they thought he was being railroaded, especially once they saw the bag of emptied out fireworks and in light of his boasting earlier that he knew how to make bombs. They were probably just feeling a reflexive urge to protect their friend and they weren't taking time to comprehend the gravity of the situation.
Total idiots. They'll have 5 years to think about it.

Don't be so sure. Despite being badly injured some people are still able to view things from a a variety of perspectives.

I recently saw a young girl on TV who told the killer who murdered her family, "I forgive you." He didn't ask for her forgiveness, either. She did it for herself. She was very brave.

But I agree, I wouldn't expect them to understand. That's asking too much.

I agree.

They're kids, too young even to buy a beer, and so maybe not have thought things through. But, yes, stupid. Now they'll grow up in jail.

I'd say a victim forgiving his/her attacker is a little different than a victim admiring the loyalty of those who may have tried to help the attacker get away with it.

You keep using the word "admire," I used the word "understand." In fact I originally wrote:

You're saying you're sure you would immediately turn your friend into the police? I'm suggesting if you -- any of us -- were ever in that situation we might find we don't know ourselves as well as we think we do.
