Explosion at the Boston Marathon.

This thread is reminding me of why I've long held the opinion that all fireworks and black powder should be illegal with severe penalties for anyone caught with them.

Bite your tongue. It was only through the judicious use of black powder (and some other stuff, of course) that I was able to do this:

and then to subsequently win one of last year's monthly photo competitions here at the forum for that photo, which I managed to take while that fireball was coming towards me after I set off the conflagration. :D

Seems inefficient. Most of the heat is going up instead of staying on the ground. Couldn't you Use the same materials to create a shock wave that pushes the snow aside and piles it up instead?

Good evening LashL

Three more suspects in custody.

Three additional suspects taken into custody in Marathon bombing case. Details to follow.

ETA: The Boston Globe: 3 more in custody in Marathon bombings
Three college students have been arrested by federal authorities in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings, a law enforcement official familar with the case said this morning.

The Boston police Web page said that three additional “suspects” had been taken into custody. It emphasized that there was no threat to public safety.

The three people were connected to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, the surviving bomb suspect, at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where Tsarnaev was a student. They allegedly helped him after the bombing, a different source told the Globe.

“Additional details will be provided when they become available,” police said in a statement. No news conference was scheduled.

UMass Dartmouth students reportedly. May be more "accessory after the fact" than co-conspirator (if I may be indulged a bit of speculation) although apparently there's also visa issues involved with two of them or some such thing. It's going to feel a bit weird if it turns out there's been a terrorist cell operating on my daughter's otherwise rather sleepy college campus.

My not-so-sleepy urban campus had a couple of terrorist cells shortly before I was there. But that was the 70s.

Sounds like they had information which they denied having when questioned earlier by police.

Police are investigating whether the classmates threw away a backpack at Tsarnaev's request after the bombing, which killed three people and injured 264 others. Last week law enforcement officials were seen searching dumps in southeastern Massachusetts.

Also I find astounding the report (same article) says
Tamerlan Tsarnaev's body has still not been claimed, a spokesman for the state's chief medical examiner said. "We still have not been contacted by the family," said the spokesman, Terrel Harris.

I guess Ma Tsarnaev is so busy giving TV interviews it slipped her mind. :(

The 70's? I think it was a requirement for accreditation at the time.

They usually went to considerable trouble to avoid killing innocent people.

I remember a bombing in White Plains NY at a building that housed an IBM (aka the International War Business Machine). They planted the bomb at the (locked) doors at the front lobby at 7 00 PM when they knew no one would get hurt.

I did a quick search of a news archive but couldn't find it.

I did find a story from 1979 about a Puerto Rican Liberation Movement that planted a bomb in a Mobil Oil office building in Eastchester NY. They called an hour in advance and insisted, "You should get everybody out of there." Luckily police took it seriously -- they had to threaten several Mobil employees with arrest to get them to leave ("I have work to do!") -- but sure enough, the bomb went off and no one got hurt.

Think about it. Couldn't the Tsarnaevs made their point by planting the devices near the finish line of the Marathon in a spot were no one would be injured?

Sure they could've.

Obstruction of Justice is one of the charges;apparently by removing the suspect's backpack from his room the day after the bombing. The third is charged with lying to investigators.

And most of the Weathermen types never actually did anything but sit around and preach Maoist/Anarchist rhetoric to each other, just like most current day right wing militia types preach revolt agains the Evil Government and pose with guns but never actually do anything.

You deleted the word "most" from his quoted text. Had you included it, surely everyone could see that there's no need to add "except....".

I apologize. Are you a right-wing militia type by any chance?

Except for the occasional Timothy McVeigh.

Exactly. And in the 70's The SLA actually did something.
My point is that most domestic terrorist groups, left and right, are blowhards who talk the talk but never walk the walk. But it is the SLA's and the MaVeighs that make it a good idea to keep an eye on them.
Have no sympathy for the people arrested today if the charges are true. If they were hindering the investigation for whatever reason they deserve a strech in jail.

I knew what you meant.

I agree they may deserve jail time. What they did was very serious.

I do have sympathy for them, though. Did they know why Tsarnaev was asking them to get rid of the backpack? And what backpack exactly?

It's a dilemma. Your friend does something horrible. He asks for your help.

He's still your friend.

I honestly don't what I would do. I don't think I would help them. Would I report them? Not sure.
