Bishop (takes Pawn) said:Follow-up: I'm certain that the majority of people who "accept" God or Jesus do so, not because they love him, but because they want to avoid the fires of HELL .
Ahhh, God-as-terrorist.
Of course, Heaven is an awesome place, presumably better than having Anjelina Jolie do, umm, well we won't go there. But presumably better than that -- all the time. It's the best place there is, after all, right?
In any event, wonderful Heaven awaits.
This is God-as-sugar-daddy.
Hmmmm.
Religion offers two choices as to why I should believe:
God-as-terrorist
God-as-sugar-daddy
Neither seem particularly good reasons as to why I should worship God as a moral imperative. They seem almost like clownish, childlike attempts at manipulation.
Of course, God wants you to be good, so you could be ye kind just for the (non-) Hell of it, only to be rewarded by an afterlife where skills of helping others are completely useless.
