Anyone think its odd that you are wringing your hands over this as opposed to a Congressman actually faking a Native American minority status, joining a fake tribe, and securing multi-million dollar contracts meant for minority owned businesses?

Before this gets too out of hand I think it needs to be clarified that it isn't Congressman Kevin McCarthy, but rather his brother-in-law, William Wages, who has been scamming the government out of ~$7 million in no-bid and other federal contracts with a fraudulent minority status claim.

Not that that makes it an better.

Whether or not McCarthy, House Majority Leader, has had any influence on the awarding of contracts to his BIL remains to be seen.

Needless to say, he categorically denies any such involvement.

I fear that there may be no way to achieve that except with the pressure of a third party added to the political arena, Joe.

Plus, "Not this election because it's too important", I'm not going to buy that either.

I'm not sure how the pressure of a third party would encourage more cooperation between the two established parties. If anything, since third parties have generally been farther from the center, it pushes GOP and DEM candidates farther to the edges to try to avoid losing voters from the extremes of their own side.

If we want more parties to have a positive influence, we need to ditch first past the post in favor of something like ranked choice, and we need those third parties to start by gaining a lot of power in more local elections and gaining a reputation for being able to actually do things.

Did she claim to be a minority by checking a box on a form? Yes. What particular minority ethnicity does she claim? Black, Mexican, Asian? No. Cherokee or Delaware with a documented instance of her using Cherokee.

Otherwise, you would appreciate the idea of someone insisting without evidence that another person is a liar, while they themselves get their panties in a bunch when that same accusation is leveled at them.

If you’re not prepared to be called a liar for every inaccurate claim you make, then maybe don’t be so quick to call other people liars.

No, the irony is in you labeling Warren a liar without considering any other possibility, and then whining that you were merely "mistaken" after being called a liar for your false claims.

There are many reasons other than misrepresentation. If she believed her mother to be Native American, then she probably saw herself as such.

Who are you to say someone is not Native American just because they do not conform to YOUR stereotype?

She might be deluded, but if she self-identifies as Native American, that is her prerogative.

You disagree with the evidence in a purely partisan way. But hey, I'm sure the non-stop Republican spin that you are paroting had nothing to do with your opinion formed in spite of all known evidence.

Why does it have to be zero or all? Can't some of the "spin" be correct and some be incorrect? Is it possible -- and, bear with me here -- that both sides have some points to make on this issue?

It's not? Then what term would you use for it? I think the term "ethnicity" is a silly term and I really wish we didn't have to use it, but it seems the most apt to use in this context.

Warren (and hundreds of thousands of other Americans) claimed Native American ancestry. Seems she was right to, it's in her DNA.

But here's the core of the question in my view: Why would she claim such ethnicity to the extent of checking the the boxes on a form? If I find 1% black in my DNA, should I then check off the black check box on those forms? As it is, I can check off hispanic and Native American if i so choose and I have much more of that ethnicity in my DNA as a percentage than Warren does of NA. The question is why would i choose to do so? Why is it so important to some people?

This is exactly why I say that ethnicity is a silly term - it really says absolutely nothing about an individual EXCEPT, perhaps as a symbol of some kind of disadvantaged status.

I really don't get this "pride of ancestors" thing, either. Why would I be proud to know that 6 generations ago, an ancestor was Mayan? Why would I contribute a tuna cassarole recipe to a cookbook of the MesoAmerican cultures and sign it xjx388 Mayan? It's just so weird to me.

I'm 1/2 German by ancestry. Does that make me a German citizen?

You are only a German citizen if you have German nationality.

That implies sufficient level of ancestry to generate animosity. By naming the tribe that also puts some other limitations on that.

If her father's family believed her mother was part Cherokee/Delaware and shunned her, it matters not a whit whether Warren's mother actually was or not.
