Funny how the rest of the world manages to have pensions for public employees and yet things don't descend into a horrifying dystopia.

Uh, have you seen what's happening in Greece? Italy? Portugal? Did you hear about the strikes in England this week?

Pensions the world over have similar problems, because as already stated pensions are inherently prone to undefunding.

Frankly I think if you taught in a school for 50 years you deserve some sort of pension.

We wouldn't be having the problems we are if they all put in 50 years. But as it stands they put in 30 years, retire at age 55 and collect pensions (and health care) for the next 30 years or more.

Large corporations go bust all the time due to corruption. How's Enron doing these days?

But generally a corrupt corporation is only of concern to their empoloyees and stockholders, not to taxpayers. There's certainly no corporation that has put Illinois in an $80 billion hole. And it's double that if you count municipal pension plans.

I'm pretty damn sure I won't see much in the way of the Sosial Security benefits promised. Social Security witholdings and payouts get adjusted every so often to conform with financial realities, I see no reason the same shouldn't be done with your pensions.

You'll see not a dime of it if the GOP is allowed to steal it.

It works both ways -- people from the opposite side will deliberately sign up to gather signatures then turn in big swaths of fake ones just to make the totals fail.

The average donation for the one effort I am aware of was $20. If Soros is in that pot, he's a cheapskate.
