Ebola in America

Please tell me none of you two actually took my post seriously.
Your notion is a valid exercise in reductio ad absurdum argument, and DanO probably nailed a reason to temporarily spare the continent and continue the search for a more pragmatic response.

Maybe that is one reason, but the real reason is obvious: need to see what sort of time Oscar is going to get first.

That's a bit of an over-reaction to a couple of cases in Texas.

Given Belz's posting history, I think he was being sarcastic here.......

On the fence about the New Ebola Czar.Concerned that he does not have a medical background, but also understand that organizional and administrative skills, and the abilty to set up a ad hoc organization on short notice are the real requirements for the job.
Let's face it,You have many brilliant doctors who are lousy organizers and bad at adminstration.

Think about it for a bit. The job is organizing the response, not being a technical expert on Ebola.

And having a technical understanding of ebola isn't relevant to organizing a response?

And it's not even just that. Yes, his job will be primarily organizational rather than medical. But why the hell is the Whitehouse unable to answer what should have been an obvious question? I mean, it's one thing if their answer is "He has no background in medicine but he's been briefed by Dr. Knowitall about the critical facts, and he will work with his team of advisors Dr. Careful and Dr. Cautious to make sure that no medical aspects get overlooked". But no, they were caught completely flat-footed by the question. That doesn't instill confidence. This is the impression it gives:

It's already been demonstrated with chocolate sauce.

I don't blame the hospital for failing to train and follow the right protocols. It's not reasonable for every random hospital in the US to be prepared to go Full Ebola at the drop of a hat. That's the CDC's job.

But I do blame the CDC for not flying in a team of specialists to ensure that the random hospital that caught a surprise case of Ebola did follow the right protocols from the start. The fact that only health workers have been infected so far is not an endorsement, but an indictment, of the CDC's strategy.

Great link. I hope everyone reading this thread has looked at the link. I wonder if people before removing their protection should have a hazmat shower. Pictures of what I am talking about are in this link. https://www.google.com.au/search?q=...UMd3gM%2C_&usg=__HEwqL6hqbqj1MU5PMy6lrrBt7d8=

The UK hospital that treated Will Pooley (the British nurse who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone, was repatriated to the UK, has since recovered, flew to the US to give blood to help treat victims there, and has now returned to Africa to help fight the disease) has a specialist unit not unlike the ideas in The Andromeda Strain: http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/08/24/ebola-victim-royal-free-b_n_5705385.html

Three other hospitals in England are on standby in case we get more cases in the UK than the Royal Free can handle. As far as I can tell, showering with bleach prior to removing PPE is standard practice here.

I have to laugh at CNN main story today about how bad it is that myths about Ebola are spreading, given CNN's coverage has been no better then any other major TV news outlet when it comes to sensationalism and fear mongering.

The time to quarantine is not after you get the bug, but before. I haven't left the house since the first case was on the news. I am still completely Ebola free. (Although the lack of food is getting troublesome.)

Do you have a supermarket which does a grocery delivery service? Suit up when the driver arrives, obviously. You can't be too careful.

I keep telling you folks that Obama is a political ignoramus.
Elected president twice, convincingly. Turned the economy around, put a band aid on health care costs, dealing with the Bush's havoc raised in the ME, all while dragging the Republican albatross around with him.

Yeah, a real ignoramus.

If you choose to stay, turn to page 94.

If you sneak out, turn to page 87.

:dl:

I can't help but wonder what will happen with Ebola...as it stands now, we shouldn't worry about this virus as a potential pandemic, but if it became airborne, good golly that's a horrible prospect.

So's an unusually deadly strain of influenza. The last one killed fifty million people.
