You may be correct but, as the Wall Street Journal reports:

Authorities said it remains unclear whether the devices would have worked as designed had they not been intercepted. AQAP attempted to blow up a U.S.-bound passenger plane on Christmas but the PETN explosives, sewn into the would-be bomber's underwear, failed to detonate.

When this story was breaking didn't they say they were timed to go off mid-ocean? I don't think they were intended to actually make it to those synogogues, that was just a sick joke.

I'm never sure how much of that is speculation, how much is knowledge, and how much is disinformation; We might not want the perps to know we have it all figured out...
