Dreams are real

Threads over garrette.
Not your call, though it is your call if you decide to participate anymore.

So I take it I don't get even the citations for the Russian papers.

Makes me think you don't actually have them.

Thanks Dave.
What Dave said was correct, but he was not first, most complete, or original. Your selective reading is showing.

commerce and cultures are all made up. Nothing to do with reality.
Hmmmm....

Thought the thread was over....

Since it's not: please provide the definition of "reality" you are using before I resort to a popular phrase from "The Princess Bride."

Vote, anyone? I vote that the thread is not over, but mushy's inability to deal with questions and his delusion that he is in control are both on display.

To be fair to mushy, this was in response to a question from me in regard to an unanswered question on another thread. Any derailing is my doing, not his.

I figured it was something like that, but it's a little annoying for a poster to jump from one subject to another in the same post without explanation or segue.

It's like the dialogue in the old "Speed Racer" cartoon:

"France is certainly lovely this time of year I wonder where Spritle and Chim-Chim are?"

A little pause between thoughts would be nice, Speed.

money is only something we invented

Absolutely correct; money is a human invention, and a very useful one.

its nothing to do with reality.

A very serious overstatement. As a means of assigning common values to goods, resources and services, it has a similar relationship to reality as the Celcius scale has to temperature. The Celcius scale is something we invented, and the Celcius scale is not in itself reality, but if I know a brick is at 500ºC, I know that picking it up will result in a very real pain in my fingers. In a similar way, money is not itself reality, but it has a very well-defined relationship to reality, so it's incorrect to say that it has nothing to do with reality.

Money has nothing to do with reality, eh?

Therefore if I filled a thick cardboard tube with pound coins and hit you over the head with it, it would cause no more damage than being hit with an empty cardboard tube?

If money is not a reality then what is it? Is it something we dream? Hang on… if it’s something we dream then, by your logic…

Oh, wait – I’m going dizzy.

Money is real as long as it is believed to be real.

Pound coins are real, but whether they are money or not depends on what we believe.

Reality is electrical signals interpreted by the brain. The same things happen in dreams. Therefore dreams = Reality.

money is only something we invented its nothing to do with reality.

So, if I dream that my arm is amputated, that is real even though I still have my arm when I awaken, yet money has nothing to do with reality even though it allows me to feed and clothe myself and gives me a roof over my head?

Dreams are not reality, because there are no consequences. In reality, my actions today affect me tomorrow. There is a flow of cause and effect. Of actions and consequences.

Dreams lack this. I have flown in my dreams. I have died. I have even killed. I awaken having actually done none of these things.

Furthermore, reality is not electrical signals interpreted by the brain. Reality is interpreted by electrical signals in the brain. It's a very big difference.

If what you say is true, then I am contacting the police; twice this year I have dreamed I won the lottery jackpot. However, on waking, no representatives from the lottery company have contacted me, and – according to you – there should be a substantial amount of money in my bank account; there isn’t (and never has been).

How do you explain this then? If dreams are real, where’s my money?
And since I dreamed several times after my little brother was killed that he was still alive, I would like to know where to find him, please.

A few nights ago, I enjoyed congress with Jennifer Aniston. However, I believe if asked, she would dispute that.
Don't be silly. Nobody enjoys Congress. They're a waste of our time and money.

Well, I don't like them. Give me a good old pound note is what I say.
