Drag Shows!!

Kilt, sulu, toga, thawb, kaftan... there have been many variations on garments across the world that aren't pants and aren't dresses. You want to tell this guy that he's wearing a dress?

Dresses are dresses whether worn by men or women. That some don't like to use the word dress is beside the point.

But remember why this came up - it was to do with the legislation that tried to define something as - to paraphrase - "people performing wearing clothes of the opposite sex". The definition was ludicrous and obviously flawed.

Well it's a distinction between using the right word for something and using the wrong word for something.

On that, we agree. But a cassock is definitely a man's garment, as it is a priest's outfit, and women aren't allowed to be priests. At least in the Catholic sorry I mean Roman Catholic church. Therefore regardless of what you call it, is is not "clothes of the opposite sex".

So, men wearing dresses isn't drag. Hopefully, example like that will help stop these stupid new laws if the obvious first amendment issues aren't enough.
Under that particular definition of the word, which I don't accept but grant for the sake of agreement, yes this is absolutely correct. The law is stupid.

No it isnt, it's about classes of things.

It is also a dress, a dress usually worn by a man but still for the legislation we are talking about a dress.

The anti-drag nonsense of the right is now appearing in Britain. "Patriotic Alternative" (the people behind the recent anti-immigrant rioting and arson) protested a drag queen storytelling event outside Tate Britain on Saturday. They were outnumbered by the anti-fascists.

Wasn't the whole clan kilt "tradition" created to satisfy an English king's fancy?
Well the traditional kilt was more like a blanket, worn by Highlanders wrapped round their body and in no particular colour or pattern. When George IV visited Scotland in the 1820s he was the first monarch to visit since the Jacobite Wars. He wanted to dress in "highland garb" so a somewhat fanciful version was developed. His loyal hangers on also wanted to dress in similar style and that is where the Sobieski Stuarts came in. They claimed to be grandsons of Bonnie Prince Charlie and claimed to have a book, the Vestiarium Scoticum, which listed all the traditional clan tartans. The design of the modern kilt was apparently developed by an English factory owner for his workers as it would be easier to wear than the great kilt or feileadh mor in Gaelic. And this time I will get my coat...

In Australia an event featuring drag queens was cancelled when the Proud Boys and some neo Nazis threatened violence.

It's heart warming to see how sensitive the Proud Boys are to.women's issues

Two priests that I know referred to the process of putting on the vestments as "getting into drag".

Priests also have in common with drag queens that they are generally decent people and generally have a sense of humour and I would have been happy for my children to have been read to by either.
