Presidential candidate Ralph Nader this weekend warned his constituents that a military draft is pending, and asked younger voters to prepare.

The independent candidate noted that the federal government is filling seats on local draft boards as preparation for a reinstatement of the draft, which was eliminated in 1973.

If you registered for selective service when you turned 18 (assuming you have) you're already all set to be drafted.

Whether volunteering or by draft...service in times of national crisis and conflict is a nobel aspiration...just ask Dick Chaney, Rush Limbaugh, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfolwitz, Newt Gingrich and the rest of the mighty Chicken-hawk contingent ... of course, like that arch leftist John Kerry you could volunteer, or like Al Gore wait to be drafted, but you could, like George Bush, have someone pull strings to keep you out of harms way in the National Gaurd...oh, wait, the national gaurd won't keep you out of harm's way in Iraq.

Rumors of a draft reinstatement emerged in the fall when the Selective Service announced that it was recruiting members for the nation's 2,000 local draft and appeals boards. A Selective Service spokesman said yesterday that the announcement was made to help fill spots on the boards, as many members' 20-year terms ended.
"It was misread then," said the spokesman, Pat Schuback. "Their terms are expiring right now, and that's what is going on."

Since there's not going to be a draft, I propose we still have a big going away party for NTW who wants to help so much he's going to volunteer.

As soon as he ships out Ill start rasing money for the Nie War Memorial (aka a pay toilet in downtown Richmond)

Honestly, Nie, don't volunteer for the armed forces. You haven't any idea what it's like to be in a war zone. And, although your chances of becoming a casualty are relatively low (compared to, say, Vietnam), if anyone's going to get shot, it'll be you.

I know this looks sarcastic, but it isn't. Much as I don't like you, I don't want to see you die because you're stupid.

They don't shoot potato peelers.

I suspect the military will spot his true potential fast enough when he is doing basic training. I think Patton referred to soldiers who also did their duty who "shovelled sh1t in Louisiana"...

The Iraqi "resistance fighters" use ambulances to transport weapons and children for flak jackets. What makes you think they wouldn't shoot a potatoe peeler? Or kidnap Chinese (talk about biting the hand the feeds you...)? Japanese... Chinese... I guess they all look alike to the Iraqi "resistance fighters", eh?

Can you believe how much crap you took for being in the National Guard? I mean, at least you would show up...
