Though the proposed draft sounds like an effort to boost Bush's war on terror, it was actually introduced by Rangel, who voted against the war with Iraq, and Hollings-both liberals.
The new draft is meant to "call the bluff" on conservative war hawks. In other words, Rangel and Hollings wanted to demonstrate to Bush the severity of committing to a potentially long-term war.
Rangel said he introduced the bill "in hopes that those people who make the decisions to go to war, to attack Iraq, would be better influenced against it if they had kids that would be placed in harm's way, or if they felt closer to the shared sacrifice that we often times talk about."

What a lot of people don't realize when they sign up with the military for a first enlistment is that they are actually signing up for 8 years. Anywhere from 2 to 6 years active, with the balance of the 8 years in the Inactive Reserve. For those like me who did 20 years active duty, we are in the Inactive Reserve for an extra 10 years. I won't be free and clear until 2010. I am technically not "retired" until then.

The Inactive Reserve will be called up before a draft occurs. And my phone hasn't rung. I'll let you know if it does.

I almost put my uniform back on on 9/11. If I was single, I probably would have. I understand the military got a lot of phone calls from vets all the way back to the VietNam era who wanted to sign back up after 9/11.

I was on vacation in Thailand when the WTC fell. I was never so glad to be back home in my life. I was on permanent limted duty waiting for transfer to the permanent disabled list when my twenty years were up. The whole thing made me feel so ill I was going to schedule an appointment at the hospital and try to convince the medical board to reinstate me to sea duty. A few days after I returned, I could hardly walk due to the arthritis in my ankle, so common sense prevailed, and I stayed on shore until I retired. The military is going to have to scrap the bottom of the barrel really hard to get to me, but I will not fight it if they ask me to put the Sailor suit back on.
