Dr. Phil Show Showcases Psychics

I hate Dr Phil. Here is what I sent.

So you want to bring psychics onto the show. I guess now that Britney Spears is out of the hospital Dr. Phil needs someone else to exploit and profit from. Disgusting that he has chosen to prey on children and their grieving families. What's coming up on next weeks show? Handicap wheelchair racing? Your show makes me sick.

et me say this clearly - all a psychic does is give false hope
Sadly sometimes not even that.
I still cannot get over the disgusting thing Sylvia Browne did when she told Shawn's parents he was dead (when he wasn't)

Good angle, Vic with the responsibility of the therapist in question.

I'm pondering writing them again and asking if they're enjoying the letters...just deciding how to phrase it, if I do.

Thanks!

That is a good angle. This isn't about an armchair general whose day job is mundane; this is about an authority who is abusing his status. Dr. Phil is an expert on the topic, and he is abusing his power.

Before the JREF was founded, Randi and I had a discussion about how power must always equal responsibility. He said, for example, that a judge who robs a bank should be held to a greater standard for breaking the law than a goofball teenager who commits the same act. I agree. Dr. Phil should be held to a higher standard than my nextdoor neighbor when it comes to advice on how to address a crisis like this. This is what makes Dr. Phil's actions in this matter so insidious.

Foolmwwunz: I slept on it, and think I will hold off with additional contact for now. Should the show even take any of our suggestions into consideration, (I'm not holding my breath.) I don't want to come across any more negatively than I already have. Yes, my ire is justified, but we know the "other side" doesn't see it that way. I have been painted as being angry and bitter when it really is just backlash at unnecessary wrongs.

Hi Quinn! I would so love that...we'll see if I can pop in more often.

blobru: Appreciate the letter. I would fall over backwards if they did contact me, but you never know. :)

Maybe they changed the schedule?? I don't know...she said it was for October 15th. Perhaps she meant they were taping it on October 15th.

I think they meant it was the date they were taping. That's why they came to you. They were looking for people who were available on Monday and they wanted you to do all the work of tracking them down.

Here's mine

"I'm much dismayed to hear about your upcoming episode that will provide a showcase for the fraud of psychics in the search for missing persons.
How dare you fling persons who have been shown over and over again to be nothing more than parasites at a grieving family, for the pursuit of ratings.
I was under the impression the the Dr Phil show was interested in providing RATIONAL solutions to family problems and emotional issues, this proves other wise.
But perhaps I'm wrong, maybe the show's producers have uncovered evidence that these people really are not predatory opportunists, but really do help find missing persons.
If that were the case, imagine the benefit to law enforce world wide.
I suggest you look into the Jame Randi million dollar challenge and consider applying for it, if you could provide proof of supernatural or psychic ability’s you would win one million dollars, money you could use to help a lot of people.

Kevin Bennington"

Yep, I messed up, Ward. I guess it was all that "red" I was seeing getting in the way. :jaw-dropp

..Waves at Kevin. Thank you!

Only four days between sending feelers out and taping a show? That is not long especially as two of them are a weekend.

Still thinking what you could have done to ruin the show. Maybe had one person there who knows about how psychics work and keeps pointing out how useless the psychic is. But then they would cut all of this out, so probably would not work.

It would only be useful if they did the show as planned (like seemingly everyone else), and then had an immediate followup as to why everything presented was bunk.

I believe giving Dr. Phil a good purgative physic just before he heads for the stage if he is going to have psychics on and promote them would be a great thing!! It would certainly result in his audience seeing the show for what it is: public bowel purging.

Dr. Phil, psychic, psychc detectives

The show, and two of its producers have repeatedly showcased paranormal charades to the public. That alone indicates the host himself is far distant from selecting facts over perpetuating paranormal shams. Many TV show producers are both educationally ignorant and so highly arrogant that they long ago lost sight of the harm they do. Journalists they are not.

Sadly, too many journalists are not really journalists. I have corresponded often with local journalists (a mid-size market) about their showcasing psychic frauds. I am consistently met with disdain or anger, but most often I am ignored completely.

I sent a message too (complete with grammatical mistakes):

Dear Dr. Phil,

I have recently learned you are taping a show about missing people and psychics. I am personally invested in a family whose 22-year-old son went missing in 2008. I am assisting this family with attempting to find their son. I have created a website: http://www.kevinhulse.com as well as appealed to Texas Equusearch to search the wooded area of his last known whereabouts and have also succeeded in having him listed in NamUs, a national registry for the missing.

Of all the things you, your show and your staff could do to help the families of the missing, giving psychics air time is the most harmful and dishonest possible. As someone who is actively involved with a missing person I feel it is important for you to re-examine the subject matter of this show.

There are a lot of people who watch your show and value you as an expert. Please do not lead these people astray. I feel it is your duty, as a public figure, to have integrity with regard to what you choose as topics for your show. You and I both know there is no credible evidence in support of psychic abilities. Moreover, there is evidence of the harm psychics cause to grieving families and the problems they cause for the investigators.

Sincerely,
Me
