Dowsing by a Skeptic

Richard Matheson wrote the screenplay. Great writer. Don was played by William Shatner. An actor.

Shatner was in some other series I believe....some science fiction thing that went nowhere?

Patricia Breslin, the wife, was in a comedy series with Jackie Cooper, The People's Choice, which I vaguely recall, just before the classic Twilight Zone episode.

And just to keep on topic to avoid AAh.
Neither was a dowser, but Shatner to his credit once did manage to tell John Edward, "No John, it's all woo woo."

Thanks for the definition! Are you describing yourself? Are there other definitions (given you seem to quote a number 1)?

Spock: Sir, the Romulan ship has engaged its cloaking device.

Kirk: Engineering. Divert all main power to the forward dowsing rods.

Scotty: She'll noo take it, Cap'n!

Sorry. Just popped into my head.

Thanks for the definition! Are you describing yourself?

The definition was to show that describing myself as once being skeptical does not make me a liar.

I am however still skeptical about many things, and probably always will be.

As for dowsing, I have no doubt there is something going on which is at present unexplainable. ( even though the majority here thinks otherwise ) I put it down to the subconscious mind, this has sparked an interest in another related thing.

Being able to quote the definition doesn't obviate that possibility.

Do you rely on evidence to resolve those doubts?

As for dowsing, I have no doubt there is something going on which is at present unexplainable.

It's not unexplainable. You just don't accept the explanation.

( even though the majority here thinks otherwise )

Reality isn't established by popular opinion. No matter what anyone thinks, there's no evidence that dowsing works in controlled conditions.

I put it down to the subconscious mind, this has sparked an interest in another related thing.

Well, I guess that explains everything then.

This is a skeptics' forum. Do you really think we don't know the definition of a skeptic?

I'd say it's more likely you are just learning out what skepticism actually is, Mr. "Ex-skeptic".

I too suspect that dowsing is due to something subconscious, and I suspect that many others here agree. I think it is your statements about dowsing being due to some mysterious interaction with the target that allows you to find anything you wish that we doubt (at least until it is properly confirmed by accurate tests). And it is your unwillingness to do an accurate test that departs from what we would expect of a skeptic.

I quote your opening line in this thread:

"Until recently I considered dowsing to be complete and utter BS."

You will now need to check the dictionary again to define "recently," "complete," "utter," and "B.S.."

So in the definition a sceptic is described as somebody with doubts or reservations.

Sasmick then describes himself as having no doubt about the nature of dousing.

So... Not a sceptic on this topic?

So much for claiming to have ever pretended to any degree of skepticism...

Wow, those offending posts disappered just as I refreshed the page!

Hey Mick, instead of going hellbent towards getting yourself banned and calling people names, could you take just a couple of minutes of your time to help find this missing child and put her family out of their undoubted misery.

Red Deer, Alberta: Red Deer RCMP is requesting the public’s assistance in locating 14 year old Mabel Roasting. Mabel was reported missing on July 13. Mabel was believed to have spent time at a residence in Oriole Park; RCMP checks of various locations have not located her to date.

Despite your avowed prowess you consistently ignore my very real and heartfelt pleas to do some real good with your ability. Why do you ignore me? Why do you REFUSE to help these people? If you can't be bothered could you ask some of your cohorts over at the BSoD to pitch in?

This is the third time I've asked you to help, what kind of person, when in possession of such abilities, pointblank refuses to use them to relieve suffering and thinks it a better use of their time to call people names on the internet?

ETA - Just read your previous post which won't be up for long (what a disgusting thing to write) - I see you are trying to get banned before you have to defend your position of sitting on your arse whilst you could be helping those in strife. You are a class act Mick, a class act.

Just a little something for the OP to consider.

Some Speculations on the effect of Geomagnetism on the Pineal Gland

Abstract

Research over the past 10 years into the pineal gland and its possible connection with a psi-conducive state of consciousness (Roney Dougal, 1986 & 1989), has recently become linked with research on the connection between the earth's magnetic field (EMF) and psi awareness (Persinger, 1988a; Roney - Dougal, 1988). This connection is explored with particular reference to neurochemical research into the effect of the EMF on pineal gland activity.

Basically, the pineal gland makes the hormone melatonin and an endogenous hallucinogen (6-MeOTHBC) that possibly causes a psi-conducive state of consciousness. It also has enzymes which affect serotonin so as to produce a variety of possible hallucinogens. The functioning of the pineal gland is affected by the EMF. Thus the production of melatonin, 6-MeOTHBC and the serotonin hallucinogens, is affected by variations in the EMF, and this could well be related to variations in a psi-conducive state of consciousness, resulting in ostensible psychic occurrences.

The implications from this synthesis are far-reaching, and those concerning our understanding of dowsing and certain anomalous phenomena are mentioned.

Cor blimey guvneh! I missed all the fun!l The AAH stuff was a hoot! "Micro penis", really SaskMick?? :) Not sure I saw the banning coming, but I did call it spot on that he'd be back. Too bad he didn't dowse his temper first. I will be very curious to see how long it takes him to throw a tantrum with his mates at BSoD.

Bye bye SaskMick. No one can say JREF didn't try its best to help. Some day hopefully you will understand.

I can't stop thinking 'bout the children he could've saved and I don't know why he hated them and the poor drought affected people so much that he preferred to dowse painted buckets instead.

What a beast! Let's hope that there is one caring soul over at BSoD who is willing to interrogate their bent coat-hangers to alleviate the suffering.

The most "recent" research date referenced in that link is 1991, with some dating back to the 70's. Now some 25+ years later, what do do we know about these "far reaching implications"? Well, other than dowsing still doesn't work.
