The press release Ron Paul's campaign put out quickly crossed the line from diplomatic to sardonic, dripping with contempt for Trump, who was described as a "reality television personality." (We have highlighted our favorite bits below.)

The selection of a reality television personality to host a presidential debate that voters nationwide will be watching is beneath the office of the Presidency and flies in the face of that office’s history and dignity. Mr. Trump’s participation as moderator will distract from questions and answers concerning important issues such as the national economy, crushing federal government debt, the role of the federal government, foreign policy, and the like. To be sure, Mr. Trump’s participation will contribute to an unwanted circus-like atmosphere. Mr. Trump’s selection is also wildly inappropriate because of his record of toying with the serious decision of whether to compete for our nation’s highest office, a decision he appeared to make frivolously.

More to the point will be who does turn up if this comes off, and how much of the little time Trump doesn't monopolise they spend on knocking those who aren't there.

Just take a step back and consider this:

People running for the highest office in the land are seriously praising and seeking the endorsement of a man who repeatedly questioned whether the current President of the United States was actually a citizen of the United States, going so far as demanding to see his birth certificate.

Just extraordinary.

This may actually help Gingrich a lot in the GOP primaries (and subsequently hurt Romney), but it is going to kill him in the general election. At least, it will if the birther issue comes up, which I fully expect it to given Trump's involvement.

Granted, the idea seems sleazy and commercial: Using a reality TV show to pick a presidential candidate. But have you checked out democracy lately?

Anybody who immediately dismisses the idea of the planned "American Candidate" show hasn't checked into what the election system has become.

One of the creators of "American Candidate" is R. J. Cutler, who produced the 1992 documentary, "The War Room," which chronicled Bill Clinton's race for the presidential nomination.

Cutler told me that "there is a yearning for real leadership that people can be passionate for," and his show hopes to tap into that. Citing the success of the "American Idol" reality show, Cutler says, "I would hope America cares at least as much about selecting its next president as it does about choosing an entertainment icon."

Welcome to the desert of the real, America.

Can something really backfire on trump? As long as something makes people say his name I think he's pretty satisfied, even if it reflects negatively on him.
