Do you know this tidbit about Lee Harvey Oswald?

I have no recollection of having ever heard that.

I listened fairly intently to the second round of congressional hearings on the assassination and I don't recall hearing it there.

I have also watched several of the assassination documentaries over the years and I don't recall hearing it any of those

And it does seem that would have been a very important piece of information with regard to the assassination.

I've only known about it since I read an article entitled "Q & A About Lee Harvey Oswald’s Guilt" on Depleted Cranium last month. The article is here...

It's a great article. It begins...

Recently someone sent me an email asking me “Do you really believe Oswald killed Kennedy?” This is probably due to the recent post I made about the assassination. I have to admit that I’m not really an expert on the topic, but I have always been fascinated by it, especially in the context of how the events mushroomed into what might be called the granddaddy of all conspiracy theory topics. It is true that a huge number of people believe there was a conspiracy involving the government, mafia, Cubans, Soviets or others, and it has spawned its own kind of subculture and a veritable cottage industry of books, documentaries and websites.

The writer of the email asked me a few basic questions about the evidence against Oswald. The questions are interesting in that they point to some very fundamental points of evidence in the case, which are often lost on many who have looked at the assassination. In many ways, the public is most ignorant of just how compelling the case is against Oswald.

Lee Harvey Oswald? I always thought it was the 'Grassy Gnome' that shot JFK.

Never knew it, and we studied the assassination as a school project. 24 years ago now though.

I do not recall ever having heard this fact before, but it all makes sense now.

The attempt to assasinate General Edwin Walker was plainly part of a larger conspiracy!! ;)

Wow. I'm surprised that so many people here did not know this. I thought we were a better-educated bunch.

I didn't know, but I don't think that has anything to do with my level of education, which was primarily in math and physics rather than history. After all, can you calculate a multi-dimensional tensor transformation from one metric to another? If not, does that speak to the quality of your education?

I wouldn't try it without proper safety equipment but I became interested in the assassination about a decade ago and studied it for a few months. If not for that I doubt if I would've known about Walker.

I've known about for quite a long time. I assumed that by now it was common knowledge. It's somewhat surprising to learn that apparently it is not.

Nope - it's news to me.

But that doesn't disprove the idea of a conspiracy, just makes it less likely. Given the unreliability of eye witness testimony, there could have been any number of events which are consistent with what people reported.

I think it's generally an age thing. If you're around my age, 30, or younger, the JFK assassination is a historical event, but not necessarily a defining moment, especially after 9-11.

That's not to say younger people don't know about it, but I'd guess the percentage is lower. Like I said, the only reason I know is because I watched a couple of hilariously insane YouTube videos then ended up at a link that told the story.

Here was the video. I thought it was going to be Bigfoot holding the gun:

The awesome starts around 2:00.

I don't see it as surprising that few around here know about this. You really do have to be pretty familiar with the case to know of it. Was it mentioned (and dismissed) in JFK? I don't remember it, but it could have been.

The bigger question is how many JFK whackaloons know about it. As mentioned, the serious ones certainly know it, and do in fact spend a lot of time trying to discount it (because they know how damaging it is), but those with basically a JFK level knowledge likely aren't even aware. They can't get past "back and to the left" and the bad reconstruction of the magic bullet.
