Did mermen ever really exist?

I effectively dealt with this thread in the first response to the OP. Why is this still going?

Epicurus effectively dealt with God in 300 B.C. and that's still ongoing.

Again all Vixen's done is somehow make yet another version of the Garage Dragon / Teapot argument... yet not realize it.

Vixen,

Do not heed Myriad and and Apathia’s advice Vixien. For they are just trying to scare you from the beauty of the sea. The road to Innsmouth can still be found by the diligent. There the faithful still linger.

Embrace and love your aquatic cousins, for it is only by co-mingling your essence with theirs that you will be enlightened and reach your true nature and potential.

Embrace Father Dagon and Mother Hydra! Do not allow the lies of the others to prevent you from fulfilling your destiny.

Flee the foulness and corruption of the air-breathers and Embrace the sea!

Evidently the Mermen have wi-fi down there...

Aw, now you've probably scared her away.

Remember, often the best way to lure someone in is with "Keep Out" signs. Iä!

Oh, darn!,

sorry,

err,

I mean there are no cookies over here in Innsmouth! No cookies at all. Don’t come over cause we are all out of beautiful beaches where gold ingots just role up on the shore. The fishing has gone down hill too.

Nope, nothing to see here in Innsmouth. No deep ones, err, merfolk at all over here!

Aw. Sadly, I have two (rather long) legs so I don't qualify, I'm afraid.

I do have a 10-yards swimming certificate from age 11. Is that all right?

Hey, Peeps. I've just been reading up on C17 war ships and read the following about the ship Vasa recently excavated from the bottom of the sea, some 333 years after it immediately sank on its maiden voyage (it is now Sweden's #1 tourist attraction):

The symbolism used in decorating the ship was mostly based on the Renaissance idealization of Roman and Greek antiquity, which had been imported from Italy through German and Dutch artists. Imagery borrowed from Mediterranean antiquity dominates the motifs, but also include figures from the Old Testament and even a few from ancient Egypt. Many of the figures are in Dutch grotesque style, depicting fantastic and frightening creatures, including mermaids, wild men, sea monsters and tritons. The decoration inside the ship is much sparser and is largely confined to the steerage and the great cabin, at the after end of the upper gundeck.

So, even the Dutch - master ship-builders - took mermaids seriously.

Uh huh. So did WWII bomber crews, apparently-

They evidently also took seriously the reality of gremlins-

and Bugs Bunny-

Or, maybe, that was all just...you know...decoration.

Had I known you were asking, "Have mermaids ever been depicted in nautical-themed decoration?" I'd have been able to answer with a clear yes, and provided you with multiple such examples myself.

For some reason I was under the impression you were asking if they ever really existed.

Oh my goodness. That means all the gargoyles all over mediaeval churches and cathedrals, plus thousands if not millions of other carvings, represent actual real creatures. I'm not going out after dark ever again.

And whatever you do... DON'T BLINK!

:D

I've seen stone statues of mermaids, which lends credence to the suggestions that Medusa also exists.
Come to think of it, I've seen bronze mermaid statues as well, so there's probably some other kind of gorgon that can turn (mer)people into metal.

ETA: To maintain the scientific rigor of the OP, I am of course forced to admit that this can also be the work of the White Witch of Narnia, or some kind of basilisk.

How is 1961 in any way recent?

This clip has actual footage of a Merman.

The Merman also says 'Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty..."
