Agreed, and that's because whatever minor crimes they do commit while they are here pale in significance to the cost of finding them, rounding them up, processing them, and deporting them.

The law should be enforced because it's the law, not because enforcement is more convenient than the alternative.

Visa overstayers in Australia tend to do the jobs legal residents don’t want to do. Provided they comply with laws generally (yes I know they break immigration laws) nobody seems to worry too much.

As I have said a number of times, half of all Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was. We do have racists here, but not many care about the overstaying Uber driver, kitchen hand or factory worker.

Turning a blind eye to illegal labor seems to be about the stupidest possible way to solve a labor policy problem.

Australia has already flipped from,

To,

"Living in our country, working in our country, is necessary to keep our economy running, something we are no longer able - or perhaps just no longer willing - to do for ourselves. So maybe instead of trying to rationalize illegal foreign labor, try to figure out why Australia needs it so much, and why Australia needs it to be illegal?

The problem in the OP isn't about people overstaying their visa, it's about the effect of Brexit on expats living in Europe EU zone. Brexit effectively made the UK a 'Third Country' and this, to continue living freely there, in an EU country, they were supposed to register as 'pre-settled' (as were EU non-British citizens in the UK) by a certain date.

Under nationality laws - at least in modern democratic states - you cannot discriminate on grounds of personal characteristics such as race or gender, but you can couch it in terms of nationality. Thus, when Denmark, for example, started sending back Syrian registered asylum seekers on the grounds they no longer needed asylum, it couldn't very well not treat UK nationals the same way as any national delegated as 'Third Country'. Choosing to be Third Country was likely the UK's biggest shot-itself-in-the-foot Brexit moment.

The vast majority of visa overstayers are just getting on with their lives. They're not committing major crimes. And when they do, and they're caught, sure, they get deported. As they should. This is the law working.

Our current government is changing the rules for who gets to stay, throwing out people left and right now, mainly of ME descent, to make the people who want all immigrants thrown out vote for them on the 13th. It would look really bad if they didn't throw out the UKians, who have failed to get the paperwork done, as well.
