Denmark: happiest place in the world

er...I'm a White Anglo-saxon Agnostic with red-neck leanings from North Carolina. I only play a zionist on the internet.

However, were I forced to join a religion, it would be either Jewdism or that of a typical, oft-found simi-depressed dope-smoking composer from Denmark. :)
Ehm.. Bob Marley wasn't from Denmark, but if the rastafari movement really is your chosen religion, then I feel I should mention that crack supposedly is a no-no in those circles :)

But of course, the funky jewish braids is of course a good step in the direction of dreadlocks :D

Thomas: I imagine as a composer you can go through some lean times. What do you do when you need to go the hospital, or need some basic health care, but don't have the money? How do you manage to stay happy when you can't afford the basic health services you need?
Well, we don't pay for health care here, only dental work :)

Let's skip all that crap and get straight to the dope (no pun intended).

Too bad. But I liked it anyway.

What is the suicide rate?

Country Rate (per 100,000)
Finland 26.4
Denmark 20.4
Austria 20.4
France 19.8
Switzerland 19.6
Japan 15.1
Sweden 14.7
Germany 13.8
Norway 13
United States 11.8
Netherlands 9.6

Jeez. No wonder they don't trust those folks over there with guns. They'd really hurt themselves then.

How do all those folks commit those suicides? I'd suppose in Japan it would be with the traditional tanto knife, but Denmark?

Do they strangle themselves with cheese or something?

Article

Okay people, this story was made for the JREF Politics forum. I want a minimum 10-page heated argument over this. There should be at the very least references to nationalized health care, gun control and government/religion co-mingling. Use of the sarcastic smiley is encouraged. Now's the time to use some of those creative insults you've been saving up. This has potential: let's pull together and make this the worse thread ever.

Yeah, but, we also have to put in the israel/palestine issue in somehow...

Hmmmm, I've got it:

Denmark: Happiest Place in the World

Danish Dynamite: Who cares about the israel/palestine issue?

Coincidence?

Our Danish brethren are probably asleep right now, so I'll fill in: can you provide evidence that these suicides are the result of unhappiness?

Are you suggesting that happy people commit suicide? ;)

Do they strangle themselves with cheese or something?
I suppose that's how a few danes check out now and then, but we also have a huge number of cases where people have browsed their way to a Bigfoot research site, and died laughing.. That counts as suicide as well here :)

Denmark, almost twice as crappy as the U.S of A.
Seems when you're not happy in Denmark you act on it...

People in the US get shot before they commit suicide. So, isn't it suicide to live in the US? ;)

And naturally: "Even in countries where cause-of-death data is collected systematically, differing societal attitudes to suicide may have a major impact on the recorded figures."

Well New Zealand ranked 18th for happiness and our suicide rate is natorious...

People flock from all over the world to study our suicides...

(no seriously)

If you're happy and you know it, take your life
If you're happy and you know it, take you life
If you're happy and you know it
And you really want to show it,
If you're happy and you know it, take you life.

Canada ranked 10th on that happiness list. Obviously we are being held back by our unhappy neighbours to the south. All those negative thoughts are pulling us down!

All these tables make one wonder why suicide rates for women are so much lower than they are for men. ;)

Good point. Obviously Danish folks have sacrificed concerns over world events for their own happiness. That raises the questions then, are they qualified to discuss politics, and is their sense of happiness deserved??

Claus is exactly right. We're too busy firing at others to take aim at ourselves. In this deadly environment, who has time to be happy?

My goodness, no wonder DanishDynamite is worried about population decline; by 2010 there won't be any Danes left!

And naturally: "Even in countries where cause-of-death data is collected systematically, differing societal attitudes to suicide may have a major impact on the recorded figures."

No doubt Islamic attitudes.

Just wait, I've got some shocking figures correlating armed violence and clowns on the way.

MSNBC: World can end poverty by 2025:

"In 1970, the world’s nations agreed to provide 0.7 percent of their gross national income for development assistance, and that figure was reaffirmed by the U.N. conference on financing development in Monterey, Mexico, in 2002.

So far, only five countries have met or surpassed the target: Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Six others have made commitments to reach the target by 2015: Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, Spain and Britain."

U.S. Department of State: Denmark:

"Denmark is a close NATO ally, and overall U.S.-Danish relations are excellent. Denmark is active in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo, as well as a leader in the Baltic region. Denmark and the United States consult closely on European political and security matters. Denmark shares U.S. views on the positive ramifications of NATO enlargement. Denmark is an active coalition partner in the global war on terrorism, and Danish troops are supporting U.S.-led stabilization efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq...."

But did you notice this?

... at present the number of working-age Danes living mostly on government transfer payments counts more than 800,000 persons (roughly 23% of the working-age population). Although this number has been reduced in recent years, the heavy load of government transfer payments burden other parts of the system. Health care, other than for acute problems, and care for the elderly and children have particularly suffered, while taxes remain at a painful level.

Oooh hoo we got you good.

American culture--and particularly popular culture, from jazz, rock, and rap to television shows and literature--is very popular in Denmark.

No wonder you guys are so happy! :)

Yes, free plastic surgery for blondes with too small breasts has suffered some, but we compensated the tragedy by taking away the free booze and candy from the elderly and the kids ;)

No wonder you guys are so happy! :)
Yeeeesss, we danoirs know all about yoooouuu, but you know nothing about uuuuussss.. Our dob' seekret plan for world domination still proceæeæed as foretold by the stars and the shrine of Wotan
