Dear Users... (A thread for Sysadmin, Technical Support, and Help Desk people)

Reading the last few pages makes me even more grateful for working at a small business! I have 5 remote users. I bought a 5 pack of sonicwall SSL licenses, linked to AD, and turned on the VPN to the WAN port. After that, 15 minutes of testing and we were done. All things said and done I enabled my entire office to do work from home for $250, and 40 minutes of time invested. Booya.

Not all heroes wear capes.

You desktop/end user facing admins must be swamped with all the WFH these days.

We actually got pulled from supporting internal users and had to triage client calls 2 weeks ago because our customer service department got overwhelmed.

Also, having been both a Mac user and a PC user, and having supported both Mac users and PC users, my perception is there is no meaningful difference between them, in terms of computer-related skills and mindsets.

On the whole, I don't disagree, but this is for corporate use and we make the work from home requirements very clear. We make the remote access validation dependant on the role of the user, so you know what you need for your specific job. If, after all that, you still choose to pay a premium for a luxury brand, understanding how to properly remove an application or where your audio settings are is a small ask to help us with our workflow.

This week we appear to be keeping up quite well. The queues certainly seem more under control.

Wish my promotion and security clearance would come through, though. I'm starting to think I've been lost.

I should have said something weeks ago. I just received my letter of offer for the permanent promotion. I'll print it out, sign it, and return it when I go in to the office tomorrow.

Someone literally just printed an email, scanned it, and emailed it to us as a PDF.

In other news, today is my last day as a contractor! I start as a permanent employee of the Australian Public Service tomorrow! Yay! Flextime, I have my eye on you.

Of course you are angry. I would be too. Surely you should use an OCR program and convert it to text before creating the PDF?

Congrats! :w2:

Not from the APS. It's considered "essential service". It's actually quite difficult to get involuntarily discharged from the APS. Basically you have to be convicted of a crime.

Well...

If you ever need to, I'd suggest punching someone. They used to take that quite seriously.

If you ever want to be offered a package, become a union delegate.

I though the path was :
  • print email
  • photo printout with phone in landscape and at an angle
  • email photo from personal email to work email
  • embed photo in word document
  • screenshot word doc
  • paste in email

Also congrats!

Oh come on! It's so much easier to just take a picture of the screen showing the email with your phone, then attach the picture to an email and send it from your phone. :D

Not quite as convoluted, but yesterday I had a user ask if he could email me a pdf so that I could print it, scan it, and then email it to someone else. Not entirely illogical if, say, he needed to sign or stamp the hard copy and then scan and email that version. When I asked if he needed to do something to the printed version before emailing it, he was confused until I explained that if there was to be no change, he could simply email the pdf that he already had to the next person himself. In his defense, he was appropriately embarrassed for not thinking of that. :p

(Not a system admin. QA document control for a pharma company, but the main printer/scanner on this end of the building is in the document control room, which is a limited access area, so I am also the person who helps everyone with their printing and scanning needs when they don't want to walk to the other end of the building.)

At my previous job, I provided user support for the company's electronic document management system, which morphed into user support for MS Office and Adobe Acrobat and whatever other software was needed to use the EDMS. I appreciate this thread. :)

The amount of paperwork I have had to do for this new position is astonishing. And yes, I said paperwork. Treeware. Things that I need to sign and date with a pen. So many of our forms are electronic now, and I think I've had to use every one that isn't in the last 48 hours.

Do you have a special form for requisitioning the helicopter?

We do.
