Cut Science in Texas Public Schools

The school has one dedicated Art, Music, and Science teacher and Three PE coaches.

They had to cut the budget so they cut the Science teacher. The students' general elementrary classroom teachers will be picking up those lessons. In my opinion, it would be better to cut the Art, Music, or PE teacher.

I attended elementary school in Texas. We had a dedicated Music teacher and two PE teachers.

Art and Science were taught by our primary teacher.

I can understand not cutting a PE teacher as they may have minimum requirements for # students / teacher in the PE class for safety or insurance purposes. And as much as I hate how sportsified public schools have gotten, PE in elementary schools is absolutely necessary. A dedicated science teacher that the kids go to once a week is not.

rjwould is on a crusade against Education as it is in the US. Sadly, though, what he offers as an alternative is the old "Progressive Education" BS, and we know how well that worked.........
There is lots that is wrong with public education in the US, but 60's style touchy feelly "let the kid do what he wants " crap is not the answer.
Its not a crusade, my 5 are all grown up now. But you see, your post is exactly what is wrong with our educational system. Your interpretation of my views are completely skewed of anything I've ever said.

You need to learn to think critically of this current system instead of just regurgitating what you've swallowed.

So when he said "There is lots that is wrong with public education in the US", you interpreted that as an inability to think critically of the current system?

I think the problem is that he's also able to think critically of your suggested changes.

He just wants to fiddle with the current system which needs to be scraped and replaced with something that actually educates rather than indoctrinates. Thats not CT. And to argue that it is CT is revealing about the education you both have received. You see, CT requires examination of the self first and the myths one has accepted as reality. Only afterwards can a person begin to view true alternatives. Too bad this stuff was never taught to us during all those years we spent institutionalized. But the good news is that there is life after school where undoing what had been done is possible, but its a choice. I made that choice.

A dedicated music teacher is more important than a dedicated science teacher? Not for a state funded elementary public education. Maybe for a private school that's focused on turning out musicians.

Certainly PE is important, but not so much they need a dedicated coach to stand around and watch the elementary students. The classroom teacher would be just as capable.

The current system does educate, unless you want to argue that the education received in America is poor in comparison to that received in, say, Somalia.
Does it also indoctrinate? Perhaps to some degree, and maybe we should try to eliminate that indoctrination as much as possible, but I don't really see much of that going on, or at least in my K-12 education in Canada I didn't.
What evidence do you have of systematic indoctrination?

What's CT?

What evidence do you have that others in this thread have not looked at true alternatives? The fact that they disagree with you?
