The thing is, the system here really _is_ "all that great". It's not perfect, but it is, in the most part, well run, effective and efficient.

Tell that to my sister, who's... um... well, actually had life-saving surgery to remove intestinal cancer, is now going on a waiting list for colostomy reversal and hasn't had to pay a penny for any of it.

Yeah, it's not perfect, but it's good enough. I think creating and maintaining the NHS is perhaps the best thing this country has ever done.

Tell that to my cousin's grand-daughter, who.... has had a lot of complex jaw surgery to correct a front tooth that erupted at right angles to its proper position, culminating in a bone graft from her hip to her mouth, and a tooth implant.

Tell that to my cousin herself, who.... has been treated for type II diabetes for the past 20 years, and last year had a hip replacement with a wait time of only 5 weeks.

Tell that to another cousin, who.... is also diabetic and being treated, but who also had complex surgery to replace his oesophagus about 25 years ago.

And another cousin, who has recently had radio-iodine treatment for her hyperthyroidism, and her husband, who has had prostate surgery and is now waiting for carpal tunnel surgery.

And my mother, who can still see (sort of) thanks to 20 years of regular treatment for glaucoma, including two surgeries.

And another cousin (I've got a lot of them....) who has had two knee replacements.

And.... the list goes on and on. The times when the NHS has fallen down can be found all over the newspapers because this is the exception. The innumerable success stories and happy patients just don't get in the papers, because that would be like reporting on every aeroplane that landed safely without crashing.

I agree, it's probably the best thing that's ever happened to this country. All hail Nye Bevan.

And there is a difference between debating how a system can better serve every citizen, and proclaiming the superiority of one that is aimed at excluding people.

I have to thank the NHS for getting me in for emergency surgery when I ruptured my achilles.

I was at the fracture clinic, they said, come back tomorrow morning, don't eat, I had my surgery by 5 pm the next day.

I stayed in two nights, saw a physio to make sure I could walk on crutches, get up and down stairs, and they let me leave when my friend came to collect me.

I was also diagnosed as being hypothyroid about a year ago, I now see the endocrinology consultant once every six months, and I get all my prescriptions for free.
