Being somewhat of a rock hound, I have had my hands of LOTS of crystals, even a few large quartz ones. They are VERY hard and resist almost any attempt at carving. I even have a couple of diamond encrusted cutting heads, that do very little in the way of debris removal.
My point in asking when the original skull was presented to the public is that such cutters were rare even 20 years ago. 50 years ago, construction of a quartz crystal skull would have been difficult, time consuming, and expensive, although not impossible.
That said, crystal grown in a zero G environment have VERY different formation structures than their terresterial cousins.
IF this original skull was presented to the public 50+ years ago, AND it shows signs of zero G formations, then at least the possibility remains 'open' that it may not be by our hands...
